Ok, I was trading with this person and he said to join fallen5///flame pally, you can't type this in as a name of a game and so I thought that it might be a private game. I put fallen5 for the game name and for the pw I put flame pally. What should I have done?

That looks about right to me, though usually I use single-word passwords. Is your character a paladin? He might've meant 'join fallen5/flame, pally'.
The punctuation of the average b.netter is horrible and in cases like that, it can leave a lot of guesswork for you to do.
Next time, just make sure that you take down each others' account names, so that in case anything like this happens, you'll have a way of contacting one another.

Yep, "/" character (or multiple "//") indicates gamename//password in Bnet language. So it was probably just "fallen5" as the game name and "flame" as the password.
Some people can't bear themselves to actually use the name you have chosen for your character and generally use "sorc" or "barb" or "pally" or whatever. I hate that. Most of the time I don't even reply when they are not using my name, or at least an abbreviation of it. It is even worse when there are about four paladins in that game and they still use "pally".
