I've been reading a bunch of forums lately about upgrading items but before I do it I was wondering what happens when you upgrade a gold item <--unique right? does it add damage, totally change the magical properities of the item or does it just add to them??
:flip:
I just want to make sure of what it does before I do it

Upgrading doesn't change the mods on an item. It just makes it into a higher item type. So for example, when I upgraded my goldwrap heavy belt, it beacme a goldwrap battle belt. The defense went up, and I got an extra row of slots for potions. Another example... if you upgrade witchwild string siege bow, it becomes a witchwild string diamond bow with higher damage. The mods stay the same tho.
The thing you have to be careful of, however, is the requirements. The new item may require more str, dex, or higher level in order to equip.

so if i upgrade a weapon the only thing that will change is the damage, and possibly the requirements to use the weapon? O and thanks for the reply
BEWARE: I've read, about upgrading shields, that it is possible to get a LOWER defense than that wich you started with (search for bugs & HOZ...)
Best upgrades are done in weapons with high %ED on it, or the case of belts with not-so-much rows.

i've heard the same about hoz, but i'm not sure how that works, since the minimum for the zakarum shield is 1 def higher than the maximum for the gilded shield.
i believe the base defense for shields gets re-rolled when you upgrade. in the case of a herald of zakarum, the upgraded version's min defense is slightly higher than a regular herald of zakarum's(forget which shield type) max defense. so you could end up getting a shield with lower defense than your original.

but blizz says the max on a gilded shield (same type as hoz) is 1 def lower than the min on a zakarum shield (elite version)

I dont know if its only me but it has a bug with gazes too. MY bone visage gaze has less defence then my grim does.

That isnt a bug... it just happens that the base def betweek the HoZ and upgrade version is minimal.
There is a bug with upgrading eth armors, you no longer get the extra 50% bonus defense for the item being eth. Doesn't seem to effect eth weapons.
