I have read alot and this is a little confusing to me, so I am not sure if the last part of that question is valid.Open = Any game played over TCP/IP or Open Battle.net using your Single-Player characters which are stored on your hard drive.

Closed = Any game played on one of the Bnet realms (USEast, USWest, Europe, Asias) using characters that are stored on the Bnet servers in an account you "own".

Ladder = Special type of characters, available only on closed realms, who are segregated from all the old generation items, (09, 08, hacked to death) have access to ladder specific items, recipies and generally a few other perks. Also, a high level character in this type of play gets to appear on the ranking system of that realm known as the ladder. Fresher economy, and generally more challenging but also potentially more rewarding.

No, closed players cannot mingle with open players, ladder cannot mingle with non-ladder, hardcore cannot mingle with non-hardcore, classic cannot mix with non classic. Everyone can only play with the same "type" of characters.

ADDENDUM: If you're just starting out, I highly recommend you play on ladder. You can still play alone if you wish, but you can always trade with others and enjoy more of what the game ahs to offer.

your next question is how to play the game right?

The battlenet button when you start up the game is for Closed realm, you save your chars on bnet servers.

Open is where you save or play your chars from your hard drive. Located under the the battlenet button. Can't remember the name of the button.

Ladder offers more items than non ladder.

This is an answer in a nut shell. Do a search of this forum and you'll find a lot of your answers already answered.

Do get discouraged, just do some research on basics, as was said, that way the forum won't get clog with the same questions all the time and people won't irritated with them.

After reading up on basics from arreat summit and from this forum, if you still have questions post away.

where is %to block listed and how does it change?

To answer your last question:
The %block is listed in your character screen if your hover your mouse pointer over the defense value.
Generally the %block changes with the amount of dexteritiy, your level, and the blockrate of the shield you're wearing. There's a formula for that:

%block = (dex - 15) * shield% / (2* clvl)

where shield% is the blockrate listed on your shield and clvl is your character level.
