Well...you cant upgrade a shako, as it is already elite. HOwever, you can upgrade a lidless to elite, if you so desire.

LEM RUNE+KO RUNE+Perfect Diamond+Exceptional unique ARMOR PIECE= Elite equivalent unique ARMOR PIECE

this works for boots, belts, gloves, helms, shields and body armor.

There are also combinations for normal and exceptional unique ARMORS and WEAPONS. See diabloii.net horadric cube combinations... there is all explained.

I had the same thought. Started on Ladder last week.

Just make sure you can get some stuff for a MF-sorc. Then its all good. :thumbsup:
