View Full Version : The Pit
Ok I read a lot on several websites about how good the drops are in the pit so I dragged my level 75 butt down there, put on almost 300% in MF, set the game to players 8 and attacked the 2nd floor. 5 years later when the war was over I got one yellow axe(no good to me) and a bunch of blue items, the uber chest dropped nothing higher than blue stuff. Is this normal? I mean I was dreaming of great gear shooting off the uniques and out of the chest like fireworks and I got nothing worth keeping. Just curious if people who say the pit is great mean if you run it 20-30 times a day you'll get a nice item or two or was I just unlucky?
I'm not writing this to complain, just that was a lot of effort for someone with my level and gear and I'd like to know if it's worth doing again or waiting till I'm way more powerful. Thanks.

well, you might try to get a bit higher lvl first, so pit runs get easier. also, you might want to try 5 players, in order to do the runs faster.
basically, the unique monsters and champion packs "CAN" drop everything, though them being act 1 monsters, they will drop low stuff more often. the pits are only good to run if you can do several runs in no time. the 8players doesnt improve the quality of found items btw, just increases numbers of drops (so you can get like more low drops ;) )
well, hope this helps a little,

Just as you said: Run it 20-30 times a day and within a week you should have collected some nice stuff.

I always get a laugh at posts like this.
I did a pit run and got no good items :(
Remember, as you suspected, MOST ppl that tell you xxx run is "godly" for drops are doing runs that number in the 100s. With mfing, you never know, be it first, second,seventyfifth....run when a good item will drop.
Most of the areas ppl mf, they do so for the POTENTIAL of good drops.
Only luck, mf%, and time increase the chances of good drops.
Try doing 20-30 pit runs, then look at your drops. If by then you still haven't seen a good drop, do 20 more, still nothing? 20 more....get the idea
As far as the pit goes, It largely depends on what character you are using to clear it. Not for Magic Find soley though, but more from a time and killing speed standpoint.
What character are you using ??
You mentioned you are in single player and put it on /players 8 you might want to try a lower player # that might help you do the run in less time.
The uber chest on level two usually drops blue items, I have only gotten a unique once.( I have done atleast 100+ runs as I do not play every day.) As with Magic Finding any where, luck plays a part, you might find something good or great after one run, or might find only mediocre items after several runs. Then again you might run the pit all day and find nothing. I have had things like that happen to me.
There have been times I have done 10 runs and found junk, and there have been timed I did 1 or two runs and found ( on different runs on different days) an IK Armor, A Leviathan, A Skullders Ire, Crown of Theives, And other high end gear, all within a few hours of each other, or a day or two of each other.
You might want to read Shadow_247's pit guide. It is archived in the strat compendium section under the Misc. Guides for 1.10.

and your point is? Your not really giving him anything constructive to say but keep trying. What i think "prob" was trying to say was that with MF anything can happen but on law of averages you should have got at least a few nice items depending on the # of runs. Persistance is the key but imo you be better off trying the bosses in hell instead of the pitt as in my experience you get much more decent drops.
Hope this helps

Well, when it comes to MF.... keep trying is just about the only constructive thing you could say... besides spouting statistics...
He's got 300% MF... not too bad...
Just keep going.... try some other places to keep yourself interested... doing the same place over and over can get boring...
[QUOTE=Kyo]and your point is? Your not really giving him anything constructive to say but keep trying.
That IS my point.
Wonder why you're not getting good drops after 10, 20, 100 runs. Not after 1
If MFing was easy, nobody would bot.
Already been said - it takes time, patience, and dedication to find good items. I've done hundreds of pit runs, and only yesterday found my first 3 soc archon....And outta all those hundreds of pit runs, I can count on one hand the number of high-end items that dropped. Vex, Mangs Song, Schaeffers, HoZ, Arach mesh...

People will do tons of pit runs and find one great item. Then they'll post it and all attention goes to the item found and not how many runs it took them get it so all you're left with is pit runs=great items. Not pit runs + hundreds of runs = maybe something good.
when I play these days all i do is magic find runs. Hell Meph is my big producer...i've filled mules from these runs, but have not found anything that trades really really big.
For variety I'll kill pindle, and do pit runs...best I've ever found has been a gladiators bane(not exactly amazing).
For the limited time I can play, Meph is the most fun for me because on many runs you'll find a unique, not a great one but at least something to trick your mind there for an instant.
I would recommend having fun, keeping it mixed up a bit to stave off the boredom and hope for the best.

This VERY much depends on the character. So far, *I* have 4 characters in hell, and NONE of them has an easy time there. None of them has killed Diablo yet. Some of them can kill some act bosses, but getting there... no act boss has it's own waypoint. It's though.
I find "The Pit" an excellent place --- did it 5 times today, got a "Reaper's Toll" which looks awesome, and a shaftstop --- probably the luckiest day I ever had :-) (I'd estimate that I do about 10 pit clears per week, so getting 5 on one day is pretty good) The Reaper is currently on my mercenary, but I don't know whether I'll leave it there --- the character I'm using for the pit nowadays is a summoning necro (lvl 81, with close to 300 mf), and the 33% decrepify pretty much overrides my amp damage all the time :-( Of course, this could be the start of a polearm barb :-)
Being "Act 1" monsters, there are very few dangerous situations --- every now and then a boss spawns with a bad mod combo, killing my skeletons in no time, but it can be done. The Fallen get on my nerves, but corpse explosion and a few blue potions take care of that, so I can safely run into the place and encourage my skeletons to follow me and kill the shamans :-) Lvl 2 tends to be more of a problem --- more bosses cramped in less space, with a lot of stairs to keep my skeletons blocked and sitting duck to be picked off by the archers. But then... I've got 10 warriors and 10 magi, and the necro is my first char so far who has done quite a few pit clearings and NEVER had to retreat because the lvl 2 entrance got swarmed :-)
Granted, sometimes things get messy --- when I went TO the pit I lost my full army in a few seconds to some huge crowd of monsters with a fanatism boss somewhere inside... when I came back a while later with fresh guys and a resurrected merc I took a LONG detour around that area :-) Picking off monsters one by one is not really a tactic a summoning necro can employ :-(
So, yes --- the pit might spit out a lot less good items than other places. But it's definitely the place to go if you don't have the godly gear to easily go anywhere else :-)
I also tried the ancient tunnels twice, but not only are they more difficult to find, I also had bad luck with narrow passages and my mercenary getting killed by bosspacks. So I decided to stick with the pit, for now. Maybe forever, depending on luck :-(
That very same summoning necro arrived in Act 4 just a few levels ago (the skeletons/magi/mastery is maxed out, so they don't improve anymore), and got his entire army wiped out in less then a minute upon entering the outer steppes. I guess part of the problem was that I woke up two bosspacks before I had encouraged all my guys to leave the stairs, but still... so I'm not even considering going after Diablo with him for items, no matter how good he can drop :-)

best item i found from pit run was ik armor(horking with barb) but that was on my 30+ something run of the day
it helps if you do them in full games
i read the drops are better that way

Drops aren't better, but there will be more drops, each of which has the same chance of being "better" in 8-player games as in 1-player. It's like doing multiple pitclears at the same time.
Personally, I do 2-player pits since I have 2 CD keys. This is battlenet, after all --- people will mess up the game if you try to play in public games, either killing you because they have no clue, or at least grabbing the items.
Also, I doubt *I* could handle an 8-player pit :-) Sure, it's Act 1... but it's HELL Act-1 nonetheless :-)

I started pit runs when my friend told me about it. On my first try I hit a 34% Gheed. Later on in the same day, I got Trang helm. Unfortunately, thats like a month ago. Since then, I only got skullder and arachnid from there. Now I just do Meph, Pindle, Eldritch, and Baal (finally!). However, Baal's been dropping junks 4 me lately :grrr:
Oh yeah, I haul my 450+ mf when I go mfing down there

I would suggest you try either Ancient Tunnels in Act 2 or just Pindle, cuz since he's Act 5, and can drop anything, he's a mroe liekly choice, but you'll have to do 100s of runs, just like other things to find anything good off Pindle.

Pindle cannot drop everything
He cannot drop Tyrael's might, Azurewrath and Arachnid Mesh.

Monsters like Hell Baal and Hell Snapchip Shatter can drop everything because their mlvl is 90+. Hell Pindle is at least 80+ but that's not high enough for Arachnid Mesh, Azurewrath, or Tyrael's Might.
