Leveling a Merc

Whats the easiest way to Level your Merc, I always find that my merc lags really far behind me in the levels, and have no idea how to raise his levels faster.

Any help would be great

Baal runs. Give him some crushing blow and just do Baal runs.

As far as Merc experience goes, does a Merc lose experience when he dies in the same way that your Necro does?

When it comes to lvling your merc it depends on the clvl of your merc. Level him in areas that the monsters have a similar mlvl to your mercs clvl. Being too far ahead will cause him to level quite slowly. It's the hardest to level your merc at the lowest levels, I've been leveling a defiance merc for my 'sin for quite some time and he's only lvl 20 atm. But you'll find with each level he seems to level up faster, kind of picks up a "momentum" of sorts.

So the higher lvl the merc is the easier it is for him to level.

For quick no brainer leveling of nm merc. I normally wait until my char is lvl80. Nm merc can be bought at lvl 47 and nm cows will lvl him up 1-3 lvls per game until lvl 70. From there proceed to Hell cows. You will also get about 2 lvls per game until lvl 80. This is because I only use nm mercs.

I will assume it works the same way with normal merc. Just open normal cows and try.

I like to stick with a2 nm mercs, that being said, I usually dont even bother trying to lvl norm mercs. As stated, it's a very slow go. Most ppl (myself included) like to get to nm/hell asap (without rushing) so lvling a norm merc imo is a waste of mfing time. Once I hire a nm merc, with any decent gear, they lvl up right along with me.

If you do decide to level a merc up from the low levels, it's important to stay out of Act 5 at first. The experience formula "jumps" at level 25; until you're at 25, you get next to no exp from the A5 monsters, and your merc is the same way. I usually run normal Travincal a lot.

As soon as the merc hits 25, he can start leveling in Act 5. From there, you should be able to just go on your merry adventuring way, and as long as you resurrect your merc whenever he dies, he'll catch up to you on his own.

I actually just finished leveling my a2 defensive norm merc the past 2 days.
He started at level 9 and is now 80.

level 9-14 -> act 1 - darkwood/blackmarsh
go for carvers. Depending on the amount of them, your merc will level once or twice per run. Remember, you can greatly increase the amount of exp if you join games with alot of people

level 15-20 -> act 3 - fetishes
go for fetishes.

level 20-40 -> norm cows
as stated in a previous post, your merc should level 1-3 times per run. Remember to join games with alot of people, trust me, it makes a big difference

level 40-60 -> nm cows

level 60+
bring your merc along with you in baal runs. If you slap on some decent resist gear/dr, he should be able to survive. If he does die, revive him immediately.
