I've just recently started playing D2 (exp) again, trying to create a cool summoner.

But now I'm wondering.. Should I max skeleton mages? And what about revives?

Thanks in advance.

Some like Mages others don't..I myself use Mages depending on my build..and what i plan on doing.

I'm in process of making a Kbobmancer...just a ber short of beast. And have maxxed Skeletons, Mages, Poison Dagger...and 1 into all cures suggested and only 1 into revives also.

If I felt like lagging people all the time in baalruns...I could add more into Revives(but I get 15 now from my 1 point) and i switch my equipment for when I want to mf with it.

The people who don't use Mages...usually max CE instead.

Mages do seem to do a lot of damage, especially when they're all attacking the same monster, vs each mage casting at a different carver. O.o

As it is, my skellymancer has max skeletons, mages, and mastery, with just a point in resists, etc., and he just finished soloing act 5, including the Ancients and Baal, at level 79.
It goes much better if you babysit your mages by recasting clay golems around to distract and/or slow monsters down while your tank skellies get around to them. I still lose a few mages every now and then, and if I get T-boned by a bad champ/boss pack, I can lose almost all eleven of them, but for the vast majority of the time, they do really well. This is doubly true when you're taking down bosses - there is a limit to how many melee summons can do damage to a single monster. Since your mages don't need to be next to the monster to damage it, it's gravy.

With +skills, my mastery and skeletons are at level 30; my mages are level 29.

He is. However, he is not a steamroller. A large portion of my play time is spent throwing around my poor clay golem to distract monsters while pulling all the little tricks I know to keep my windchimes all pounding on what I want them pounding on. The other part of the time is spent dodging monsters' piercing projectiles, such as slinger spears and !@#$ gloam bolts, then finding corpses to replace skeletons that the game eats when I pull a tactical retreat too quickly.
His hell resistances, with all three Anya quest rewards, are barely in the positive range.

The most amusing bit is that in 4+ player Hell games, it's almost impossible for him to get his first skeleton. Admittedly, I *do* have 30 stat points and 10 skill points unassigned, but it's not that big a deal for now.

He's the paragon of the saying 'slow and steady wins the race'.

You can use Attract to defend your mages from behind or at intersections...Decrep to slow down the champions and uniques. If you cast Attract on a monster next to the boss the attracted monster will often attack the boss and draw his ire away from the mages.
