I was broswing the forums, and the hunter build seemed to fit my tastes, so I took It for a spin. I recently got a Kuko, and the forums say that they are a great bow to use, but I am killing really slow with it in act 5 nm. What's my problem?
dig back and look in the strategy forum for the old 1.09 hunter guide, i don't think the 1.10 one is out yet. that should give you the correct sockets for it to get max damage. :)

Upgrading the Kuko couldn't hurt your damage...
The problem with upgrading the Kuko is how drastically the requirements change.
Cedar Bow - 53 STR, 49 DEX
Shadow Bow - 52 STR, 188 DEX
The demon machine fires a bit faster, but you may want to look into getting a witchwild string.

I have a level 91 Hunter Druid on non-ladder USEast, created before the patch. He alternates between two weapons, one of which is the Kuko (the other is a Buriza). He also has to switch between crafted gloves and Jalal's Manes b/c one has Um and the other has a 15% IAS jewel (for breakpoint purposes). The Buriza does considerably more damage, but the Kuko fires much faster and is a heck of a lot better for crowd control.
The trick to hunters though is not to rely on your gear entirely, you're going to have to get a lot of help from your mercenary and summons. The Kuko is terrific for holding back large packs but you can't kill like, say, a 91 WW Fury Druid would. They are a little bit slower to level but they are fun as heck to play.
Just to let you know, my Hunter has Might mercenary (Fury Great Poleaxe, Duriel's Shell, and Vampire Gaze (both with 15% IAS jewels for reaching his breakpoints). Summonwise, I maxed Grizzley and Dire wolves and put 5 into Spirit wolves. I maxed out Heart of the Wolverine and put one into Carrion Vine and Ravens. Elementally, I have one in Cyclone Armor and maxed out Volcano (since this was 1.09, I know it would really only come in handy on single, stong enemies. Now with the synergies, it's a lot better and my remaining points are going into Molten Boulder). Also remember you are going to need a lot of resistance charms and poison charms.
I hope this helped.

I have a lvl 6x Hunter and he's doing OK in Act I Hell right now.
I use a Buriza most of the time with a Plague Bearer on switch (I've started working on Rabies for the PI critters).
I use the Dire Wolves for crowd control & the Bear for tanking Bosses.
I always keep 5 Ravens going as a distraction. When they blind critters it's just gravy.
