View Full Version : Best RPG Ever?

:hanky: I was just wondering what you guys think is the best RPG ever? My vote goes to Final Fantasy 7, what isn't to love about this game? The materia system was the best magic system of all the FF's IMO. It had the best characters, period. Cloud just looked bad ***, his sword was almost the size of him.

It also was a tear jerker at the part on Aeris died :hanky:. I mean, what isn't to love about this game? Back in '97 when I saw the commericals when it would show Sephiroth, I thought he was part of the team... I wish he was, IMO he's been the best villian in all the FF's, look at him!! He wields the infamous 'Masamuna' and has that black cloak and the long hair goin' on YEAH BABY!

I still find myself playing the game to this day, starting a new game, and just beating it and doing everything that's possible in the game. I love Final Fantasy 7.

The ONLY game that stands next to Final Fantasy 7 is Final Fantasy 3.

Fallout 2.

Without a doubt (as long as you donīt count StarControl2 as a RPG).

I donīt even have to come up with a motivation for that one, I think. Everyone whoīs ever played it agrees with me. Case closed. You can all go home now.

That's a tough one. It is a tie between Fallout and Betrayal at Krondor.

Fallout was just a revolutionary game. Unlike final fantasy, you can do almost whatever you want. Shopkeeper charging too high prices? Wax him and take his stuff. But no selling to him later. Freedom to choose between good and evil as well as the plot sets this game firmly in the lead.

But if any game can challenge that lead, it would be Betrayal at Krondor. The first game to really convert me to gaming, your party starts off able to explore anywhere (except the Northlands where the bad guys are based) and complete epic quests to save the kingdom. With a killer story written by Raymond Feist, who wrote the novels this game was based on, BaK holds a special place in gaming history.

Bah! You must all bow before the Glory that was Ultima 7 and Ultima 7 1/2. The greatest RPGs ever made. Nothing else can stand against them. Nothing else even comes close. If you havnt played them, go get them. The graphics may lack something now (these games would run on a 386) but even that cant hold this game back. Play it now!!!

Final fantasy 7 was great, but defintely not the best of the series. 6 (3 in america) takes that spot. And chrono trigger was better than final fantasy 7 as well.

My favorite game, not just RPG, is Final Fantasy 7. It was the first game I have ever played when I got my Playstation many years ago. I just love everything about it. Nothing will ever replace such an opus of the gaming world. You're right London, Sephiroth is the greatest villian ever. The music is wonderful too. It's funny how I haven't played it in over three years and I can recite half the melodies in the game, but I don't think it's the best Squaresoft has collected. FF8 had great music as well, but that game wasn't that great overall.

Yeah, FF8 and FF9 just blew. 10 was alright, I haven't played 11 yet, but I hear you have to pay for it, so that answers that question right there. Yes, 7 was the first RPG I ever played, and I fell in love with it. I bought the original Playstation just for FF7, it's a game that will I will play for many years to come.

FF11 is online only. Like Everquest. The game costs $15 monthly. Plus more for each character. Not worth it when games like *crowbar* are free.

Morrowind. End of discussion. Massive world, completely open ended quests, and tons of excellent mods. And even as old as the engine is, the game still looks beautiful.

Dogmeat is the greatest game character of all time.

Agreed. Half the time he's the only NPC I take, and he always manages to last pretty much the entire game. Plus, he's never shot me with a 10mm SMG.

I'd say Fallout 1 is the best.

Star Control 2 is the best RPG of all time, particularly the 3D0 version (it was much better than the DOS version). The universe is huge, the story is great, and its just endless fun.

Phantasy Star II for genesis is #2, One of the hardest RPGs.
and Final Fantasy 4 (2 in the US) was the best final fantasy, and comes in 3rd (with the exception of Tactics, which is more of a strategy game) Final fantasy after 4 just got way too easy. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, etc were a joke. Still fun, but no challenge.

Final Fantasy 4 was increadable, as was FF3.

But i would choose Final Fantasy 7 out of all of them cause even till

today i find myself going back to it every now and then. It was the first

game i got when i got my playstation and ive had it ever since.

Although another RPG i enjoyed very much was Chrono Chross now i

know im probabley going to get flamed for mentioning it because

of all the Chrono Trigger fans here but i really loved CC.

Another one that was very fun was The secret of mana of whatever

that old SNES game was called. I used to play it all the time but a while

back my house got robbed and now i cant find another copy of it

thats not selling for an insanely high price.

Final Fantasy 3 for SNES. I am so addicted to that game. Just the entire premise of the world being destroyed and having to start over was just amazing. Plus, my favorite character of all time, Locke, is in that game, so you can't beat that.

Computerwise, I have led a somewhat sheltered RPG life. But I would have to say either Baulder's Gate, or go with Dungeon Siege. It isnt' a true RPG, but it was awesome none the less.

If you don't know what game starts out with that quote, then you are not yet a complete person. And no, I'm not going to tell you. :-p

Other great ones include Final Fantasy 4 & 7, Chronotrigger, Might & Magic VI, and Bahamut Lagoon (okay, the story blows, but it does have the best combat system EVAR!!!1).

For anyone who's unaware, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End" is from the book of Revelation in the Bible... Yes, Xenogears used it too, but that game is such a load of arse. Yes, the story uses lots of vague metaphors and whatnot for religious things, but it just ain't a good game...

Between the h...o...r...r...i...b...l...y... ...s...l...o...w... ...t...e...x...t... ...s...p...e...e...d... and the cinematics you couldn't skip (especially before a certain battle with Ramses and Miang or whoever that was nigh impossible in comparison to all the battles leading up to it), not to mention the drab and utterly useless gameplay system (you didn't need to level up throughout the game as it didn't really help you most of the time), it played like a frickin' movie, not a game.

That is quite simply the second worst game I've ever played (the first being Legend of Legaia or somesuch which was just, ugh, miserable).

Vagrant Story
It had the best gameplay, the best graphics (for continuity and form) of any Playstation game, a TREMENDOUS localization, and so much replayability it hurts. You can check just about any major site that rates games, and almost everyone gave it near-perfect marks. It's just the most polished RPG ever released in my mind. It's also not an easy game -- you don't just walk through it without dying. What a perfectly made game.
Fallout 2
Fallout 2, as was said by Dross, was incredibly revolutionary in the way it organized the plot. My big caveat was that the earliest versions were VERY bug-filled especially with loading times and the like. But man, between the old lady with the blue bong at the beginning to crankin' some Jet and icing shopkeepers, that game was the bomb-diggity. Extra-bloody is the best perk ever.
Ogre Battle
Ogre Battle is one of the few console version games that is open-ended as far as picking good or evil. And that gives it a Hell of a lot of credit in my book. It could be really hard, or really easy, but to get the good endings it was really frickin' hard. Tons and tons of fun, and just so complex that faq-reading pansies have an anal-retentive conniption fit trying to get everything just right to get the best ending.
Star Ocean the Second Story
One of the most unique RPGs for the PSX methinks, it had a load of different characters, and was almost impossible to get everything in. There were relationships between the characters (that were altered by story decisions and combat action), and was otherwise kick-butt good. Being able to create jewelry and armour and whatnot out of materials you found was pretty sweet too.
Hero's Quest (Quest for Glory)
This game was one of the best early PC RPGs. Made by Sierra, it had the text input system, a wicked sense of humour, and a fun story. Slaughtering the gambling goblins in the camp was always fun, and it was one of the few games where dying was actually favourable at times because the messages were just that funny.
Final Fantasy 4j (2 in NA)
Now, Final Fantasy 4j was a great game, don't get me wrong, but I think that it (along with most Final Fantasies) are vastly overrated. It was the last of a line competing with Dragon Quest essentially, and did a great job at it before Final Fantasy moved on to another form and market.
Dragon Warrior 4
The best NES game ever. Topped DW3 in every way imaginable to create a good long RPG that was simple but had hours of fun.

Honourable mentions:
- Dragon Quest 5
- Parasite Eve
- Tactics Ogre
- Shining Force 1
- Phantasy Star 4
- Secret of Mana

Xenotorture, if I want to watch a movie, I have plenty

Vagrant Story was very good, I didn't have time to play it much but it was quite interesting

which Ogre Battle is your favorite? I've never owned one but played them all to an extent and gosh they're fun, I wish they would expand upon your ability to be evil and provide more evil characters to recruit

Star Ocean 2nd story I have always heard good things about but have never been able to try it :(

DW4 is also one of the most expensive nes games bleh, oh well, roms for me

DW7 was alot of fun if you haven't tried it, its huge

Shining Force 2 is one of my favorite games of all time and I am eagerly anticipating the remake of Shining Force 1 as I never had much of an opportunity to play it

Phantasy Star 4 was like, $75 so I never got it, and I couldn't find a rom that wouldn't eventually crash, but it was fun while it lasted

oh, should also mention I'm rather fond of the Suikoden series, tho I've never played the 2nd game, impossible to find and quite expensive

It was 4500¥ used (4500 yen is about $42 American). The one copy they had, however, seems to be sold out at the store by me, and that irks me greatly. Though I do have the FF1 remake.

Heh. You and I had a bit of an argument in the past over this game.

Between the h...o...r...r...i...b...l...y... ...s...l...o...w... ...t...e...x...t... ...s...p...e...e...d... and the cinematics you couldn't skip (especially before a certain battle with Ramses and Miang or whoever that was nigh impossible in comparison to all the battles leading up to it),

I don't recall a problem with the text speed, but it has been a while since I played it. I enjoy cinematics, but Xenogears didn't have very many by today's standards. Early on they were frequent. I still wonder why they made Fei's first encounter with Elly a cinematic. On the other hand, Disc 2 has hardly any before you get to the end of the game. Anyways, since we play these games on a TV screen, the graphics are very important to me, which is why I like cinematic scenes.

not to mention the drab and utterly useless gameplay system (you didn't need to level up throughout the game as it didn't really help you most of the time),

I thought it was a nice change from the standard "FIGHT/MAGIC/ITEM/RUN" thing which was used in both the FF and DW series, as well as many others. I liked getting new techniques to try out. The only improvement I would have made would be to have had a time limit for entering in the button sequences, so that there would be a chance of pressing the wrong buttons and doing the move wrong (like in Street Fighter 2).

it played like a frickin' movie, not a game.

I think much of our difference in opinion here is that I prefer a good movie to a good game. In other words, I think I would have liked Xenogears even more if it was in fact a very long movie (or a full-length anime series). This is why games that play like great stories are near the top of my list.

What I really liked about the game

- The plotline: Definitely the biggest bonus for it for me. I like a story which is built around what I call "plot subsets" (and since I'm not an English major, I don't know what the correct literary term is, nor do I care much to). I.e. the story begins with some local conflict, and eventually things fall into place to reveal that the original impression of the story is in fact part of something much larger, and in fact the original story may have previously been seen through the wrong light, such that the truth is quite different. Xenogears is built upon many layers of this. Every time you think you have the story figured out, it takes some monumental twist and goes deeper and becomes more complicated.

- The use of religion: I may be atheist, but I recognize that religion makes for a great story, and there's nothing I like more than a science-fiction explanation for modern religion (this is part of why Evangelion is a favorite of mine). Now PLF, I know you are going to say that Xenogears just tossed in catchphrases and references from religion without bothering to tie in the story of the game to the original meanings of what they took, and that Evangelion did a much better job of this and that you even wrote a paper on how the NGE storyline was a retelling of Genesis and all that. I actually agree with you to some extent. I don't think it is completely haphazard, but is very simplified. I think you're looking at it the wrong way, though. While it is true that Xenogears takes from real-world religion, the plotline of the game implies that modern religion takes from the story of Xenogears (or I should say, the distant past of the story of Xenogears as the main Xenogears storyline is supposed to be Earth's future). The simplification is acceptable on one part because there is an implication in the story of the game that mankind has, since the landing of Deus, been sheep-like in following the leader (Miang) towards the eventually reunification with Deus. The specifics of the religion itself are not as important as the notion that there is a religion to follow, because those who would unquestioningly follow their religion (like Billy) could therefore be led to accomplish goals for Miang and Deus. The simplification is also essential, I think, because the average person is not as well-versed in religion as you are. I already said that I'm a big fan of Evangelion, but one of the things which irked me a little is how much reading about it I had to do online after I had finished watching the series, because I wasn't picking up the tiny details and obscure religious meanings. For example, I honestly had no idea what the "Lance of Longinus" was before reading a NGE spoiler site. Most people I know offline are also very confused by things in that series, even though they enjoy it. Xenogears was a little more friendly in that regard.

- Elly: I like the FF series, but I have to say that I am really glad Xenogears has a character like Elly. The over-use of childish female characters like Aeris/th, Tifa, Yuffie, Terra, Relm, Rinoa, Selphie (the worst), and Dagger/Garnet was getting old really fast. They made Elly to be a strong female character who hardly ever was degraded to being cutesy.

- Sex: No, I'm serious. What's the deal with all these games that have a big emphasis on the relationship, and then you never see the characters even kiss? If the two protagonists don't have the cajones to jump in bed at some point in the storyline, then I'm going to be angry. Xenogears is the only game to date I have played which made any sense in this way.

- Music: I've heard great things about it's successor, Xenosaga, but as I haven't played that yet, I will still say that Xenogears has easily got the most beautiful and emotional music ever written for a video game. Yasunori Mitsuda is brilliant. I'm a music nut, so this is a big deal to me. The only two games which come even remotely close for me are Final Fantasy 4 (Nobuo at his peak), and Chronotrigger (which is also done by Mitsuda).

So yeah. I know we still totally disagree, but at least now you know why I like it so much. ^^

My point is simply this Tech -- if I wanted to watch a religiously-themed anime with strong on the surface women, I'd pop in Evangelion. The game was a distraction to Xenogears, and the text speed was REALLY slow. That made it a bad movie too. It was mediocre in two things and never excelled. There were so many small changes that would have made that game fun and enjoyable...

Ok I'm going to have to break this down into separate categories:

Best Story: Final Fantasy VII - Very well done. You have to play the game many times to piece together the entire story. There is a lot more to it than most people think.

Best Gameplay : Dragon Warrior VII - This is by far the best game when it comes to gameplay, nothing even comes close to it. With over 100 hours of game play and lots and lots and lots of jobs (including monster jobs) to master.

Best Music : Chrono Cross - The music in this game is simply incredible. The sound track is amazing as well...obviously

Most Humouous : Dragon Warrior VII - You'll laugh out loud many times while playing through this game. Some of the things people say is just out right hilarious.

Best "Classic" : Lunar Silver Star Story Complete - This game has it all. Great story, wonderful characters and a sound track that rivals Chrono Cross'. A must play

Most Replay Value : Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross - With multiple endings in both games and over 40 characters to collect in Chrono Cross, who wouldn't want to play these games over and over and over

Best Characters : Lunar Silver Star Story Complete - Hands down the best characters ever in any RPG. You'll laugh with them and you'll cry with them. The character development is second to none.

Worst RPG: Secret of the Stars : Everything about this game sucked. Play it only if you're incredibly bored. The time in your life you'll lose from playing this game just isn't worth it.

Honourable Mentions:

Dragon Quest V - Probably one of the best in the series. The story line is one that spans many years as you start out as a child and finish the game as an adult. Unfortunately it didn't come to North America and it looks like we're going to get screwed with the PS2 remake as well. There is however, someone who is looking to translate the game but needs a translator. PM me for more info if you're interested.

Earthbound - This game is actually very good. That is if you're willing to put the time into it. It tends to scare off most people with the graphics and cheesy characters but give it a chance.

you should play Disgaea, the recent Nippon Ichi games have been quite entertaining. As funny and enjoyable as DW7 was it couldn't compare with Disgaea

My all time favorite has to be Final Fantasy 6 because of the great story, characters, and music. I still love leaving the game on for 20-30 minutes and sit in Doma Castle for a while. Here's a list of my other favorites:

Xenogears (Good music)
Chrono Trigger (More good music and the baddest man Magus)
Dragon Warrior 4 (Great classic)
Phantasy Star 3 (I like the Choose Your Own Adventure aspect of it)
That one game I can't mention here.

Although 7 did have a good storyline, I find that 6 is the best out of all of them
