View Full Version : Deadly Strike and Critical Strike
Does Deadly Strike stack with Critical Strike?
For example, if you're level 50 using WWS, (50% DS) and you have level 7 CS (49%), does that stack to 99% chance of doing double damage?

I'm not 100% sure on this but I'm under the impression that they are done separately. So you'd end up with a 25.5% chance that you wouldn't get the double damage. The mechanics are probably stacked a little more in your favor since you'll be checking a second time if the first time fails.
If you're using WWS then I wouldn't worry about it since eventually it will get very high. Most Witchyzons worry more about speed and penetrate so that the Amp Dam will hit more.
Lastly, normally I wouldn't respond since I'm not certain but I know how frustrating it is to put a thread up and get a bunch of views but no responses.

i have to tentatively agree with royalesse - i also think they dont stack, one rolls first, and if u fail that roll then u have a chance when u roll the other.
Because if they stacked you would, if my drunken maths are semi accurate, have a ~25% of doing 4* damage. But this will probably get ripped to shreds, but i have more cold beer, so i'll survive the trauma:D
Thanks for the reply.
One more thing: Is deadly strike the same thing as critical strike?
OK, 2 more things: Does the double damage double the base damage of the bow, or does it double the damage after all the calculations are done?

just found this on my travels:
http://www.diabloii.net/items/modifiers/special-modifiers.shtml
to quote:
Deadly Strike
A % chance of dealing Double Damage. The damage is doubled after all other bonuses, including elemental, Str or Dex modifying weapon damage.
Will never stack with Asn/Barb/Ama Critical Strike bonuses. It rolls for 2x damage for one, then the other if it fails. So having this increases double damage chances, but never allows 4x damage.
and this: (from the character skill guides from the far left drop down menu)
Critical Strike
"A chance that your attacks will do double damage". This passive skill increases the percent chance of your total physical damage being doubled. When it's successful you'll see a small flash of light on the target.
This double damage is calculated after all other bonuses, but does not include elemental damage. If you have a Deadly Strike item, you will roll for one, and if that fails you will roll the other, but never get both at the same time; no quadruple damage bonuses.
hope this helps - back to the beer :D
Great! Really clears things up. Although I never thought about 4x damage, I expected the %s to stack. Oh well, the more incentive to level my amazon to clvl 99 for 99% DS with WWS hehe.

the explaination of common modifiers of uniques is near bottom of page as well as the formula for % 2x damage from cs and ds. the easy 100% 2x is the supposed savior or wws pathetic damage output,

YIKES... didn't know that deadly strike doubled elemental damage... maybe I should get a Witchy for my Enchantress then to kill bosses.
Also that says to me that you should minimize your critical strike since it doubles only physical damage while Deadly strike doubles all damage.
Thanks Shankskie here's one on me :drink:

i suppose it all hinges on which is calculated first.

Is there any way to determine which is rolled first?

No, doesn't help much. To bad, it would be nice to know. I can see how it would affect skill point placement in cs if ds is rolled first or last. Thanks.

Here's the AS stuff on deadly strike... it's in the Special Magical Effects area. Looking at it suggests to me that CS is done first then DS:
Deadly Strike
This is a chance of doing double damage. This bonus is applied after skills such as Critical Strike and any other damage bonuses. Critical Strike (CS) and Deadly Strike (DS) exclude each other.
If you have a 33% Deadly Strike item, and 68% Critical Strike Skill the complete chance to get double damage is:
=CS + (DS/100)*(100-CS)
=68% + (33/100)*32%
=68% + 10.56%
=78.56%

Lets just say that with a WWs at lv 74 I get the sparkling stars that indicate DS/CS a lot..surely more than 75% of the time. Then again Amp seems to trigger much less than 2% of the time, which should be every 50th arrow, which should be every 5th Strafe Volley (unless its only calculated once per Strafe animation and not for each of the 10 arrows per Strafe.)
