Introduction

Hello let me introduce my self. Some of you know me as xPumafangx. Some people know me as Bri. I have been playing this game on and off since 1.04. The Paladin is my favorite class to play, mainly because it is the most flexible class in the game. Wile using this class I have been able to meet many deferent kinds of people and seeing very deferent kinds of builds since I have started. I never got in to the class till 1.09. Before that I have been playing barbarians. Before I started to play the class of Paladin I did not think it would have meet my expectations. Well it didn’t, it surpassed it. Now that the Paladin is one of the top classes to play now in 1.10, I want to give to you the reader what I know about this class, the Smealot/Ranger. So you too can enjoy it as much as I have.

I will be giving you 4 chapters on how to build this kind of Paladin. In each chapter I will be giving away in depth information about the Smealot/Ranger. The info will range from what to use and why you should use it. All of the info given is facts that I have looked up or tested my self. Also this guide will be made for the people that just started this game, and also for people that have been playing for as long as I have.

Chapter 1. Building a Motor

Like a car the character is the instrument you use to get around in this game. And well your stats and skills are you motor. The stats are the easiest part to do. Here I will explain it.

Strength and what it does. You need it for using your items. Some times you do not need a lot of it, some times you do. For this build you will be adding just enough to use all of the items you have. But what it does is increases your damage. By 1% for each point you add. For some weapons in the game it adds 1.10%. Those items are legendary mallets, ogre mauls, and Thunder mauls. You should only be using the Mallets if you decide to use that kind of item.

Dexterity like strength you only want enough to use for items. Unlike strength dexterity does a lot more then just gives you more damage. It also helps your block rate, attack ratting, damage to missile weapons, and defense.

Vitality only does two things. You do not need it for items, but you will end up adding all of your remaining points to this. Because it gives you more life and stamina, by +3/+1 per point added per level. The end result you want to have like 2,000 life give or take a few 100 points.

Energy does only one thing. It adds too manna pool. All of your skills will be using around 2 points per use. And by leaving it at its base witch is 15. It will give you as much manna as you will ever needs for the rest of the game no matter what level you are. Adding even one point to this is a waist of your time and mine.

Now that we have the stats covered lets move on to skills. I will be going over what skills to max out first. Then I will be going over the rest.

1. Sacrifice- Like a true Martyrs. The Paladin is willing to sacrifice his own life to kill the minions of hell. What it does is takes 8% of your life and uses your essences to give your attacks more power. At level 1 it does 20% to attack rating and 180% more damage done. Per level it gives 5% more attack rating and 12% more damage done. This is the first skill you will be maxing out. At level 11 you will be getting your hands on 2 Catran’s Seals. Witch is a ring, which gives you 6% life leech and damage done to you by 2 per ring. With 2 of these rings you will have enough life leech to heal your self by 4% damage you do per hit. This is the first skill you should max out. Meaning put 20 points in to this skill.
2. Zeal- this skill is the bread of your butter. It has changed a lot over the years I remeber when it added 1 attack per skill level. But that does not matter right now. Because right now it gives you up to 5 attacks ending at level 4. But at the same time this skill gives you 10% to attack ratting and 0% more damage done at level 1. Per level added you gain 10% more attack ratting. Then at level 5 you will get 6% more damage done, with 6% more damage added per level. Sacrifice helps this skill out. With more damage by a %, by 12% more damage done per skills level of Sacrifice. With Sacrifice maxed out you will be getting 240% more damage done at level 1 zeal. Witch is really sweet. You will be starting adding points to zeal at level 20. But will stop adding points to it at level 60.
3. Fanaticism- this skill will be your main aura. What it does is 4 deferent things at once. They are increases your damage, increases your teams damage, increases the attack speed you and your teammates, and increases you and your teammates attack rating. Making this skill highly useful. At level 1 this skill gives those things at these amounts, party damage 25% your damage 50%, every ones attack speed by 14%, and every ones attack rating of 40%. Adding to each per level as well. I do not want to go in to this to deeply. You should start adding points to this till it is maxed out at level 30.
4. Holy Shield- Is a extremely useful skill. What it does at level 1 is adds to your def by 25%, raises your block rate by 14%, and 3-5 more smite damage. It does have a timer. Witch at level 1 is 30 seconds. All of these things are increased per level. This is the last skill you need to max out.

Now for the rest, I will be talking about the most important skills first then the least important.

1. Smite- The Paladin uses his shield to bash his enemies to death. This skill is your butter of the bread. Every point you have left after you have maxed the 4 skills in the list above. What this skills does is at level 1 are ignores defense and block rate of who ever you are fighting, gives you 15% more damage, a % chance to knock them back, and stuns them for .6 seconds. But only the damage added and the stun rate increases for every level after that. Note: Smite gets its damage from your shield, attack range from your weapon, and attack speed from your weapon.
2. Vengeance- you do not have to add any points to this skill. But you can if you want to. You only should because what it does is adds elemental damage to your attack. Witch gives you a way to kill monsters that are immune to physical. You may not need this skill if you have a weapon that does a large amount of elemental damage away ways.
3. Charge- what it does is makes you run all most instantly to your target. That is why you should hotkey this skill. But do not let this skill damage and attack rating fool you in to adding more skill points. Because this skill is very buggy, the programmers when they made the 1.10 patch made a mistake. Some times your Paladin will use the skill in a very slow running speed or will just freeze up. I will not even tell you the damage or attack rating of this skill at level one because it is meaningless for this kind of Paladin.

With ending the first chapter I will now explain how you will add skill points to your character wile leveling it.

Levels 1 go to the Bloodmoor. Do the first quest you will be able to get to around 4 levels I think. For the quest reward add that skill point to might. Witch is your first prerequirements for fanaticism. And you will be using that aura till level 31. Around level 4 or 5 go buy some stuff. Add all of your stats points to strength. In fact know how much strength you need to use all of your items before hand. If you are poor or new, get like 110 – 210. It really matters on what you find. Now get in a party and go level and do quests. Wait till you are level like 10-15 and do act 1 boss games, till you cannot level any more. After that go to act 2. Beat the first quest. Use that skill point so you can add to blessed aim. Now you have a choice either rush to the end of the first difficulty or do the game by yourself. If you are new do not get a rush. Keep playing it is a fun game. If you are getting a rush, wait till level 24. Then do cow games, till you cannot level any more. Then do normal Baal runs, till like level 40 something. Lets get back to skill placement. At level 20 you should have sacrifice maxed out. After that do max out zeal till like level 30-31. At that time do this for every level add a point to zeal or fanaticism, alternate with the 2 skills. That should end around level 60. With each skill quest you get add to prerequirements for holy shield. But if you are having trouble, like for say you are not getting a rush. Just add to the prerequirements skills. For dexterity is also like strength just adds to it every now and then you will never need more then 145 and that is pushing it. Compared to like a Smealot. Witch should never need more then 100. After that add to vitality in fact add that mixed in with dexterity. Good places to level in nightmare and hell are act 5 Baal runs. Good places to find stuff are in act 1-hell countess runs for runes, and act 1 hell the pit, more on the pit and countess.

Chapter 2. Fine tuning your car

In this chapter I will be talking about what items to be using. This in its self is the tricky part. Because of the 2 main skills being used zeal, and smite. Are very useful with 2 very different kinds of items. Smite is very useful when using items with plus to skill. Wile zeal is a very different story. This build uses zeal a lot more then it uses smite. So we will be building this. Using items centered on zeal. But one thing that needs to be done at all times is to all ways have an elite paladin shield. Well not when you are a low level. There are a lot of items out there that will mess this kind of paladin up really quickly. But as long as you stick to these things you will never get mad that your Smealot/Ranger is dieing in hell. Well maybe just do not blame me. They are at least 75% resist all in hell, 4fps zeal, absorb in each element, as much deadly strike as you can get, at least 1-2k zeal damage per hit, 50% damage reduced by a %, 75% block rate, 48% faster hit recovery, and some kind of elemental damage. I will give you a list of items that can do this, also a number of sets that can do just that.

Now I will be giving you a list of items to use from high end, to the cheap easy to get that most people would just sell off to Charsi. I will start off with cuirass. Then I will move too helms, boots, shields, gloves, belts, rings & amulets, and then the best for last weapons.

Cuirass

1. 1.08 Arkaine’s Valor – there is no better item that blizzard will ever make again. Funny thing is that you could still be killed using it.

2. Boneweave shaftstop – second best highly fixable as well. Can get 1616 def with a perfect one. Other then that the best mod is that it has 30% damage reduced by a %.

3. Leviathan – It is a lot like a shaftstop to be honest. Just less damage reduced with more strength and not more life. Cool green look.

4. Stone & Gloom – both are very good items but are a lot alike. Gloom having the lower enhanced defense, has the higher resist all. Wile stone having the higher defense has the lower resists all. Even though defense is cool and all defense is not all that needed.

5. 160/60% ias- this was once the best armor you could get for a Smealot. What it is is jeweler’s elite armor of the whale. It has 4 sockets in it with a large boost to life. In the sockets you add 4 40% more damage and 15% faster attack speed jewels.

6. A quick list of cheap items: Griswold’s Heart, Lionheart, and Dark Adherent.

Guardian Angel or Chains of Honor– This item main strength is the, fact that it gives you a lot higher resist all witch is great verse classes that uses elemental attacks. Other then that it does not do all that well. It should not even be upgraded. Not given a number because it is a side item.

Enigma – mainly used because it has teleport on it. Making it a side listed item just to put in your stash.

Helm

1. Vampire gaze – I have used this item for a very long time. It is dependable for its 20 – 25 damage reduced by a %. Depending on what kind of helm you get.

2. Crown of Ages – nice helm I did not like that it did not have duel leech. Witch is needed since this build does player verse player and player verse monster.

3. Harlequin Crest- This helm is good, giving you a lot of things. But it does not give you enough damage reduced by a %. The plus to skills on it is great for some one that wants to use smite more then they would use zeal.

4. A list of cheap easy to get items rare circlets with duel leech and resist all, Tals mask, and well what ever you can find should work.

Veil of steel – this item alone has 50% resist all. It is needed for a side list of items to be kipped in your stash.

Belts

1. Thundergods Valor – It basically gives you 20 in strength and 20 in vitality with absorb in lighting.

2. Verdungo’s hearty cord- this belt is like O my god cool. 40 to vitality and 15% damage reduced, and 10% faster hit recovery. This thing does a lot for you when you use it. Works well when it is perfect and used with a storm shield.

3. String of ears- this is the cheaper verdungo’s hearty cord. Really easy to get Just try to find one with 15% damage reduced.

Now for the belts you want in your stash.

Snowclash – This belt is used for fighting some one that uses mainly cold damage.

Rings & Amulets
All rings and amulets are just items you want to keep around.

Raven frost – You could all most never go wrong with this ring. Why, it gives cannot be frozen, 150-250 attack ratting, and absorbs 20% cold damage.

Dwarf star - Absorbs fire damage, and plus 40 to life.

Wisp Projector- Once again I am adding a ring that gives you absorb an element. This one is lighting.

Bul-Katho’s Wedding band- Plus .5 life per level, and plus 1 to all skills.

Angelic halo and angelic wings- this thing gives you plus to attack ratting per level. Only use this if you feel that you need more attack ratting. As in you do not use smite very often or you do not have a highlord’s wrath yet.

Highlord’s wrath- Speaking of witch, this things is awesome 20% faster attack speed, .375% deadly strike per level, +35 lighting resists, and plus one to all skills.

The rising sun- you become all most immune to fire. Great verse Diablo, some of the monsters in hell, and fireball sorceress.

Metalgrid- all resists of 35% and 400-450 attack ratting.

Shields
Like rings and amulets shields are something you want to switch around. Unlike rings and amulets you only want to keep around 2 or 3 shields.

Sanctuary- this thing is very versatile. You get a nice block rate with it. Really high resist all. Good amount of defense. Then to top it off you have slow missile charges as well.

Exile- this shield is one bad mother. Even thought of as bad mannered. The main thing set around this shield is that it gives you really high defense plus a % chance to cast life tap.

Storm shield – This shield used to be the best shield in the game. Now it was set to the side when the cap for damage reduced is set at 50%. But it still has it uses. Mainly the fact that it has 35% damage reduced, 25% resist lighting, and 60% resist cold. I like to state that an um rune is my favorite thing to add to this shield. It has a very low amount of smite damage.

Spike thorn - 20% damage reduced. Then add on that, player verse player does not lower the damage done to attacker per level. Makes that a sweet little shield to use. Bad things is that if you where not going to win the duel any ways you will still die and they will be at a lose of a large amount of life. Also it does give the most amount of smite damage for normal shields; it is still nowhere compared to elite paladin shields.

Herald of Zakarum- this is one of the shields in this game that is loved the most by all paladins alike. The elite version is the one you really. So you can do the most smite damage you can. Put an um rune in it, or give me your ear. Just pulling your leg, I mean ear. HAHA

Rhyme or Ancients Pledge- these 2 shields when added to an elite paladins shield with resist all are good for the poormans choice. Rhyme is just a little better since it has magic find and cannot be frozen.

Boots
This is a small list of boots to get.

1. Gore Riders- these boots are really good for its deadly strike, crushing blow, and open wounds.

2. War Travelers- these boots are great for when you have maxed deadly strike. Because they give you 15-25 damage to your zeal attack witch is added in before you add the damage given to skills.

3. Now for poormans choice go with boots like Immortal kings and Aulders advance.

Gloves
Another small list of items needed.

1. Dracul’s Grasp- The main thing about this is that you are getting like 5% chance to cast life tap and 25% open wounds.

2. Steelrend- these gloves are all about doing more damage.

3. Lavaghout- are the poormans ideal gloves. Also I would like to say that laying of hands, magnus’ skin, and sander’s taboo are all good items as well.

Bows & Javelins
Now lets talk a little about the ranger side of this guide.

1. Widowmaker- this bow is ideal for the fact that it gives you guided arrow. But not only that you are getting some magic damage as well. It does have 33% chance of deadly strike. This bow just screams ranger all over it.

2. Eaglehorn- this things is tight because it gives you attack rating with a good amount of damage added on. Not only that but it is fast as well.

3. All 3 of the elite javelins are great. But at the same time you could do a lot better with elite rare weapons. Also you can get a really good cheap rare one. That will out do deathbit by far.

Expiable of a godly rare javelin and a good one are.

POKE STAB OR NOOB USER
Winged Harpoon Winged Harpoon
400% enhanced damage 150% enhanced damage
300 to attack rating 150 to attack rating
40% faster attack repairs 1 every 5 sec
Repairs 1 every 5 sec

4. The poormans pick death bit throwing battle dart.

Charms
Now for the last list of stuff that isn’t a list at all. Get Annihiles, after that you need to work with charms on these things: resist all in hell max it, 48% faster hit recovery, then after those are done you want fine small charms, and small charms of vita. If you have room go with small charms of run walk. Never get plus to any Paladins skills grand charms.

Now that you have what to wear. Lets talk about how to wear it.

I read the whole thing, i thought it was all aound good. A wasnt sure if you were meaning to emphasize(sp?) smite or zealot as the main attack, but since i wes lookin for a pure smite guide thats how I read it. Looks nice buy you man want to add a little section of item stats that dont work with smite such as : DS, +min/+max charms/jewels and that type of stuff. I think im about ready to start my smiter after reading a few misc v/t or v/z guides. I was gonna use COH on him and i'll tell you how that works in pvp since u didn't seem to care for it.
Peace

YES SOME ONE THAT GAVE ME A INFORMED OPINION!!!!

No I realy don't care for coh. The problem with it is that it has such a low def and that it is geared to fight player vs monster. Verse the high def of sacred stone armors. The realy high resists and plus to skills are what makes it realy work. I can realy see why some buddy would put it on a vindy/temlper.

Chapter 2 is only half way done. I will be adding that kind of info that you asked about in that.

I will talk about using witch skill to use more then the other in latter chapters. Like with how to fight monsters and player vs player.
