View Full Version : Good ol' pvm mauler

Decided to make a pvm mauler. Eventually, I'll get up the funds to create a real good pvp mauler (fireclaws eat your heart out :grrr: ) but until then, I must satisfy my druidic appetite with a pvm wb :)

Just wanted some quick suggestions on gear, and spirit:

here's the gear I'm thinking of:

-496% upped shaeled ribcracker (have 2 shaeled tombreaver too, but ribby does more dmg/sec with my available IAS.... Unless its' base 10 instead of base 5 like I thought)

-15% dr string

-archon CoH (or basically any nice elite CoH)

-dual leech ring

-ravenfrost

-highlord's wrath

-jalal's (um)

-Gloves and boots I'm thinking IK for their wonderful mods. However, lava gouts (or LoH) + eth treks would be nice too. Eth treks for awesome def, plus nice other mods, and lava gouts for the enchant AR boost or LoH for the nice dmg to demons (I need 20% ias on my gloves no matter what if I'm using ribby). I'm leaning toward IK though. Any suggestions here??

Also, since I'm against fireclaws  do us old-school maulers still need bstar (or the equivilant like nords/azure) + tiamat's on switch for PI's? that might really suck, in some parts of the game :(

Spirit:

I'm a damage freak, so I'd prefer HoW over oak. However, having not built a pvm werebear in 1.10 yet (I know, tsk tsk on me), I am wondering if he'll have enough life to survive well without oak sage. So... will I survive well in hell if I go the HoW route? I need to know.

Thanks for reading through my post, and I appreciate any comments/suggestions!

i am in the middle of my own PVM mauler.
i am using a jalals, ik maul, ik gloves, ik boots, ik belt, and looking for ik armor. ik will give u attack rating, and elemental damage. it is 2x shaeled for 80% ias. i have resist / leach rings and ammys, tho im looking for a raven frost, a medel heal, and a highlords. i use oak as it gives a HUGE life bonus to the bear. and i am usin a might merc for damage. u couls reverse thesetwo and use defiance/HoW but i like my combo.

Oak Sage could be very cool life booster to wb but im pretty sure that How will work too. My Shockbear is using How and he rules (ok, he´s shockbear and dosent take many hits...).

I have been planing to pvm mauler with lots of life, maxing all life skills and using powerful life boost equipment (that good ol gerke´s sanctuary would be nice...)

Unless youre running with a group of ppl fatty there are some very tough Pi's in act 5 alone the would even beat up bstar/tiamats since id assume with that sheild you wont have more than 20-25% block. The guys i talk about are Pi minotaurs and stygian witches. Before that are ghosts which really suck even with fireclaws(GOGO mana drain!!!)in act 2. Actually looking at some of the spots where you could be tied up i see no actual reason to stick around and fight Pi's unless they are faster than you. You could always go with chance to cast decrep or amp:D

P.S. yes i know ghosts appear in worldstone too and another way to go would be a ton of poison damage charms but i know you id would be ar/damage charms all the way:D

Give your mercenary a Reaper's Toll and almost all monsters PI will be history.

hi steve!

Yea, I was thinking shaeled lightsabre + tiamats now... for the nice light absorb vs. gloams. But I have a reaper's to put on my merc too, as Kefir suggested, so PI's shouldn't be too bad. Plus, I"ll just run away! =D

thx for the suggestions so far everyone. any more anyone has to offer??

Oh yeah that reapers tol suggestion is pure :D in my mind, my LF zon uses her merc to annihliate light immune/phys immune in the chaos sanctuary when doing diablo runs :D.

Gear looks okay, you have an annihlus? what kinds of charms do you have?

yea, I didn't list charms really, cause they aren't gonna be too big of a deal.

I'll have 1 anni, a bunch of 19 or 20 life scs with and without resists, and probably some "fine" charms for AR + max dmg. probably also some steel charms with second mods, for more AR ^.^ I'd like to get 9k+ AR.

Charms aren't my main concern. Right now it's boots/gloves... do you think IK is a good choice?

ok, so scratch the tombreaver or ribby idea.

Now I'm lookin at either BotD Great Poleaxe or BotD Giant Thresher.

GThresher can get me 1 more fpa faster (6 max) IF I get 69% oias.... ouch.

GPoleaxe can get 7fpa (same as Gthresher w/o 69% oias) with only 26% ias, easily doable. And does more average dmg/sec. However, if i COULD get Gthresher to 6fpa, it'd do the most average dmg/sec out of just about any weapon there is, I think. So....

1. Can anyone think of a weapon that would do MORE dmg/sec and have a decent swing speed?

2. Is it worth sacrificing my jalal's and putting on a CoA with 2x ias jewels just to get that next bp with Gthresher?

Any suggestions/ideas are greatly appreciated

Ok fatty i'm really tired and heading to bed so i can't do the math right now :(.

First off I'd say use a 2 shael ik maul + gloves + boots and keep the rest of your setup. Other than the COH (i use um shaft/um valor) you have the exact setup as my bear if you go the ik route :). Like i said i'm tired so you are gonna have to do all the math stuff :(.

Second off use how AND might. My mauler hits 10k or 11k ar with demon limb and does 3.5k-6k damage I believe with 3300 life atm. I think a bear does fine without oak as long as you have a few vita charms which you said you have.

Third off, are you using shockwave? I have just one point in it and it's the best crowd contol there is and it will also make up for your "low" life.

Fourth off, PI's won't matter at all with your ik + reapers merc (it's not like there's THAT many of them anyways).

Ok that was much longer than i really wanted but oh well. This is what my mauler did and he solo'd hell with relative ease. Anyways, hope this helped and i'm off to bed about as fast as this little guy :creep: .

I knew I shouldn't have showed you my Eth Botd Gthresher...look what it finally did to you.

My Mauler Bear is following the guide by TheDragoon...he explains everything in it...including your merc choices as well(which is why I have a Botd rouge)

Just follow his guide...and you will do just fine.

thx hos, but...

I know thedragoon's guides :) I've read them years ago, when they were first being written, and I read the updated ones too. Anyway, I DO agree, it has a vast wealth of great pvm knowledge in there, and I used it for some of my first werebear and werewolf builds.

Anyway, thx for the tip. I actually looked at parts of his guide to come up with the max dmg/sec with BotD Gthresher vs Gpoleaxe and oias stuff. As always, a great reference to any pvm shapeshifter
