Make the question more specific. Such as, what is the best armor for a pvp fire sorc. Or, what is the best, as in, best for all types of classes, armor?

There is no the best armor. I would say vipermagi is the best armor for a fb pvp sorc. By no means is that the best armor for a bvb pvper. The best armor for both of them if they had to use the same armor? Perhaps Enigma.

yeah I just tested this all out. for Mf'ing , chains of honour beats out Dusk Enigma for only the amazon. all other classes, its Enigma. 25% mf on it adds enough if you get a skills/mf ammy like i have, a shako, goldwrap, wf (yeah helps, but upped wws works nearly as well) wartravelers and such. really, the res all of 65% and 8% life leech with +2 skills, extra huge damage to demons and undead, Chains wins out by a landslide.

best armour in game?

Dusk Shroud Enigma. Archon plate is technically the best, looks crappy though on most characters. some nice plate be cool, but too heavy normaly, wire fleece looks the best on all but zons. (imop) (plate looks best on zons)

pvp? jewelers archon plate of the whale, 100 life, with 4 40%ed/15% ias jewels in it. that would be best for that, zon wise.

I have CoH in a superior dusk. Probably the best armor around - atleast for my bowazon.

Cryptic: The one you can afford is the best armour.

Cheap and low end: Twitch
Cheap (-ish) mid game to endgame: Duriels Shell
Medium expensive allrounders: Shaftstop, Smoke, Lionheart (Preferably in a Dusk Shroud/Archon Plate)
Expensive: All the ones that need high runes to make (e.g. the ones mentioned by the posters above)

Comparing Lionheart to Chains of Honor. I went back to Lionheart. Why? The extra skills and resists did not make up for the extra vitality, dexterity and noticable enhanced damage across the board.

CoH is in an archon plate-nice extra defense, the extra damage to dead and demons was...nice. I ran World Stone Keep to Baal, Chaos Sanc, Flayer, Travincal, generally Act V over and over. I did not like my dex dropping, my AR already bad made even worse and vitality...well 123 vs 103 gives me a noticable cushion when archers, oblivion knights and gloamy things are trying to kill me.

I resolved to use Chains on a more melee oriented character, my amazon rarely lets anything get within melee range.

This is was my experience comparing the 2 runewords for armor.

It was the same with me: I tried my newly-made CoH archon on my Strafer and I liked my old Lionheart better so I changed it back. Gonna build new ama just for the CoH, though. Overall, I think Chains of Honor is the best (for ama).

coh archon looks incredibly sexy on a blizz sorc with nightwings and a fathom ^_^ plus it enables me to tank 16k blizz about 4 times and being able to dish 15k blizz ^_^

totally agree

for the price it has the best mods and is the best legit armour in the game

all this gubbins about 160/60 and Enigma, and to some extent CoH, some of you will claim you self found all the ingredients, but 95% of all those armours wouldn't exist without dupes/bugs etc.

and i also agree with Jek - for caster chars, the Vipermagi is also top notch.

Most definately the runes used to make enigmas, botd and coh are duped, but i dont think that matters as they still take much work to get, unless u know a duper or buy one off eBay. Most used runes are duped and most definately the ber in my enigma as the guy told me set this in your armor after u buy it... it still was hard to get, in fact 3 ist runes at that time, but what im tryng to say is thats fine if your legit and dont like people who bought their enigma, bers, ohms...but it still is hard to accumulate the items to purchase duped runes, they dont come cheap, anyone trying to buy a zod currently realizes this. the reason people became interested with diablo again was the new patch, and more importantly the new runewords...denying yourself duped runes will also lead to the denying yourself the new runewords which for a diablo fan is unthinkable so i say at least try the runewords as they made the game fun for me again.

go enigma, go coh, go stone (stone is super easy to make even for peeps who play solely with what they find, so i very much encourage its use as it rocks)

Suprised nobody mentioned the ever-owning Tal Armor. Use it with a Tal's Mask (another highly underrated item) and a belt for more magic find and still have some great stats, like 55 all resist (15 poison), 10% dual leech and a ton of extra life/mana.

Really nice for PvM.

Basically it is really impossible to say this ##### armor is the best because... it depends on your build. Let me use an example. I have a high dex bowazon (approaching 500). Very little in anything but dex and at level 87, its quite challenging in Hell. Not to kill but to keep from being killed (low life). I have a good solution for me that let me kill the ancients without dying once. It is call valor +2. I needed life big time, and with the bonus to vitality, I get a huge boost in life. I don't think any other armor would be right for this build. If I had a zon with decent life in the build, I could consider other armors that would be better. This is the beauty of DII. Almost every answer depends on the build. Its also the reason on all the forums, you have endless questions with only limited responses.

I will say it now and repeat it later.

THERE IS NO BEST ANYTHING, IT DEPENDS ON YOUR BUILD!

Their is a best for your particular build. That is the problem we all face. Figuring it out takes some thought and planning.

In Xpac, to me it's definantly Guardian Angel. Both PvM and PvP. That 15% to all Max Resists is unstoppably valuble. Of course, first you need 75% resists. And of course you can throw something nice in there. Maybe Ber, then equipping 1.08 Gerkes Sanct (worth ALOT on nonladder, but it's still around I think (don't play much xpac) ) And a good way to get resistances is to equip the underated Silence weapon... A bit weak but in a fast weapon it's good. But, as everybody knows not much can be as valuble as a godly rare/crafted armour.

Depends on your build. My tankazon uses Duriels, my strafer (poor) uses a Spirit Shroud (with 2 pf rubies) in hcl hell, my mf zon a 4 socks pf topazed wire fleece, my mavina-zon the set kraken shell etc.

My vote goes for Spirit Forge Armor, or Wealth (runeword). Spirit forge gives great life mods, 2 open sockets, some fire dmg and some other useful mods. Very nice armor indeed. And wealth is some cheap mf and gold find for the poorer folks such as myself which is why I made my Hell Andy/ Raven runner. It's paying off after only an hour.

Anyway, ethereal gladiators bane is pretty cool. For a bowzon CoH in PvM is kinda crap imo, who cares about resist go with insane damage + life leech with two strong tanks. Ed/ias light armors +life or dex are pretty cool.

Archon enigma is CRAP for all around armor, breast plate is way better on necro/sorc/pally/assassin. Enigma is bad on amazons, save teleporting charged strikers. And on barbs the extra 400 defense doesn't outweigh the 140 life on all those other chars :)
