don't have a link or an article, just was thinking about this, what are your favorite arcade games of all time? I'll throw together a little list of my own to kick things off.

10)Mercs
9)Soul Calibur
8)Lethal Enforcers
7)Tetris
6)Mortal Kombat 2
5)Raiden
4)Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
3)Virtua Racing
2)Bust-A-Move
1)Frogger

Honorable Mentions: Pac Man, Street Fighter 2, Smash TV, Galaga, The Simpsons

so, what do y'all think? where did you waste your quarters and adolescent years?

If by arcade you mean ones you have to drop quarters into then there was one called track and field that was awsome to play. There was also the now clasic Gauntlet that had 6 people in it at once and always a line at it, if you ran out of quarters there was someone that would jump in and take your guy till they ran out of quarters. Fun times I'm so glad I can now play my game while sitting in a nice high back chair.

Golden Axe
The Simpsons*
Area 51*
Virtual On
War
D&D

* games I actually wasted the time/money to beat

Deathwing

As Gauntlet was a 4 player game, and the machine only had controls for 4 people, 6 player Gauntlet must have been a bit cramped.

Street Fighter 2 was good.

Elevator Action
Donkey Kong
Dragon's Lair
Space Ace

and a little later...

Mortal Kombat
Dragon's Lair 2

Tekken 2 and 3

I remember the games, but not all the titles. My memory for names is terrible.

10) Commando
9) Crossbow
8) Tekken 3
7) Punch-Out
6) I can't remember the name of this one, but it's a Star Wars game where you sit in a cockpit-like chair and fly X-Wings, Snowspeeders, and Speederbikes, as well as have duels with Boba Fett and Darth Vader and fight your way on foot through the ruined Rebel base on Hoth to get Leia to the Millenium Falcon. The X-wing segments are so fast and furious that you can easily wear yourself out playing them.
5) Gauntlet
4) Twilight Zone (pinball)
3) The Main Event (I think, at least. A tag-team wrestling game.)
2) WWF Royal Rumble (Don't laugh, wrestling games double as good fighting games.)
1) Tekken 2

9)Arkanoid
8)Super Breakout
7)1942
6)Raiden
5)Defender
4)Galaga
3)Space Invaders
2)Frogger
1)Pong

After looking at my list, I'm thinking I might be damn old

Golden Axe sounds fimilar...is it something like a cross between Gauntlet and He-Man?

Death Merchant
18-04-2004, 00:01
Robotron 2084..... I wasn't very good at it, but it got fast and furious real quick.

Hey Spiral, it was called "Star Wars Trilogy." Made by Sega. I think it's the best Star wars arcade game ever.

Golden Axe was definately the good stuff. =) Also, I can't recall the name (Sprint Racing/er?) where there were about 4 steering wheels, with a topdown view of a dirt track. The controls were pretty iffy, but once you figured it out you could basically just give the wheel a fast spin and then grab it just right to turn the corner perfectly. I used to love playing that.

Dudes and dudettes, you are forgetting the staple of arcades! Pinball! Where would the world of gaming be without it?!

Also good ones are/were Galega(sp?), Centipede, and (not totally sure on the title) Seven Monsters of the Seven Seas or something like that. It's a two player game where you sit in a booth with these odd gun things, like scuba lamps, I suppose, and you fight sea monsters in each of the seven seas. Such a great game.

EDIT: Gah! I nearly forgot about Joust!

Good ones Pedro. I dropped a lot of quarters into Defender. Some others that were good: Tempest, Phoenix (if you can tune out the noises), Asteroids, and maybe Joust. I remember when Tron came out how cutting edge it was....lol.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the most awesomest coin-op ever, Burgertime

Other notables from my arcade heyday: Tempest, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Super Pac-Man, Elevator Action, Joust, Roadblasters, Galaga, Star Wars, Centipede, Millipede, Arkanoid, and lots more that I've forgotten.

Shameless pinball plug: PinBot, High Speed, Jokerz, Earthshaker!

Time Crisis 2, I've spent more money on this game than any other arcade game combined
Area 51

Avalon
18-04-2004, 10:09
Rush. And later on, Rush 2049.
Then there was the Time Crisis series. And Gauntlet Legends. Area 51.... There was this side-scroller Streets of Rage knock-off that we jammed up so that we got free plays way back when. It pwned quite much. DDR every once in a while. Oh... Blitz. And later, Blitz 2001.

We'd (we being my friends and I) would spend hours at the Student Center playing, or at the Airtight Garage, this arcade in the Sony Metreon complex. We pwned.

Street Fighter 2 is just good, but not worthy of the top ten???? Blasphemy! I've never seen any other game reguarly attract crowds of 10-20 kids gathered around a single machine in 7-11.

And for all you Simpsons fanboys :), that's was just a re-graphiced TMNT. TMNT was a way cool game though. I remember making trips to the game shop with friends exclusively to play that game. Another cool game in that genre was X-men. It could have 6 players if I recall correctly.

Did anyone else play that big Ferrari 355 game? It came out about 3-4 years ago. It had a 3 screen panoramic view and cost about $2 to play. It was a simulation racer and actually had a clutch that you had to depress in order to shift. It's probably the closest you can get to experiencing a Ferrari without actually being in one.

I can't believe all the people listing Area 51. It just seemed such a cheesy looking and technically inferior game to me. I must not have seen something about it.

Thunderstrike - it was one of the vertical scrolling airplane -blast the living **** out of everything in your path games - had something like 16 lvls. I'd play it everyday on my way home... and then they took it out! :grrr:

Tmnt, G-Force (or G-wing..dogfight sim), Gauntlet Legends, Pong + space invaders
Yeah, the arcade threw together an old atari package. 1 machine, two games to choose from.

Cant forget SoulEdge (or was it soulblade..) bah! The one with cervantes, siegfried, mitsubishi etc.

Gosh, I so love Golden Axe. Played it long before I even was 10 years old. I love playing the little bearded man with green outfit. That's probably the only game I've wasted coins on. It kind of reminds me of "The Lost Vikings".

I wasted more money on Street Fighter 2 than I care to mention... by far my all time favorite arcade game.

In honorable mention though, there are several:

Golden Axe (very cool graphics and interface for it's time)
Tempest (a TRUE classic and one of the originals)
Pac Man (I remember when throwing a quarter into one of those machines seemed like a privilege) :teeth:
The Simpsons (played my fair share of that game as well)

X-Men machines were usually either 4 or 6 IIRC

I liked the Alien V Predator side scroller beat 'em up too

Man, how could I forget Cruisin' USA?

That game was awesome, then N64 took it and it got cheated.

I blame PS1 and N64 for the down fall of arcades.

Area 51*
House of the Dead 2*
Silent Scope 1* & 2*
Street Fighter 2*
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The Punisher

I should also add Marvel vs. Capcom. But only to brag about how I beat it with just one quarter.

And Soul Calibur. Or did it have a different name in the arcades?

Pierrot le Fou
19-04-2004, 07:45
Time Crisis III
House of the Dead III
Soul Calibur II (Conquest Mode)
Medieval Madness
the last Williams Pinball machine, I will save $5k and buy a machine, it's just that good
Super Street Fighter II Hyper
I'm pretty sure it wasn't a commercially legit machine, but a tweaked one, that was just like normal SF2 except you could do stuff in the air and there were all sorts of bugs with that, but it was fun
Mortal Kombat I
My friend had the top score list locked up between him and his brother because they were the only folks in the arcade who knew how to get to Reptile, and you got 10 million points for beating him (back in the day when it was points -- not victories...)
Double Dragon
Obviously the old school throwing people off the edge whack them with bats madness was tremendous for any seven year-old
Bubble Bobble
How could you NOT have liked this game?
Galaga
It was absolutely great to play this game only to get pwned within 30 seconds over and over because games in the 80's were frickin' HARD.
Arkanoid
Because pong was improved upon.

Another game that ive played quite a bit but never really thought about it

is Carnevil. I know its not a favorite of most people but ive spent
