View Full Version : Cheating in online games (MMORPGs)

With some of the recent threads asking for ideas on what MMORPGs to play, I wondered if those other environments had as rampant a cheating problem as exists in Battle.net. I haven't played any other online games so have nothing to compare to and have been a little afraid of committing to another if the experience will be easily ruined by cheaters. Do the games with monthly fees tend to have less cheating, or at least a quicker response to cheating issues?
Secondly, do you think that online games will begin to show a decline if a good way of dealing with cheating isn't found? Why would I continue to buy online games if I know that the cheating will stop me from playing within a month or two?
Thanks.

Most of the time, pay-for-play games have much tighter anti-cheat measures, ban more frequently, and are better supported. I dont about the demographics of cheat/noncheat populations, but the games that crack down harder on cheaters seem to have better longevity. (game-that-will-not-be-mentioned nont withstanding)
On most if not all MMORPGs your account name is directly connected to your credit card, your name, address, and other personal info then its not anonymous like diablo2 was.
On D2 the only thing that connected you to the account was your IP and the name you wrote when installing the game.
So thats why there are is almost no cheating on MMORPGs.
I've been lurking at a couple of "Lineage II" sites and forums. They're currently in the last stages of an "open" (generally available) Beta. People complain about bugs/exploits, third-party-program-generated items, bots, e-bayers, etc. It's pretty reminiscent of DII B.net.
The game looks like a lot of fun and very addicitive, however.

I have not noticed much along those lines in daoc. Only thing I've heard of are crafting cheats, but I'd say the problem is far from rampant.
I've played Dark Age of Camelot for 2+ years, and yes there are cheats such as radar and macros, etc. However, cheats are not nearly as rampant since security and in-game support is much higher than games like D2. Most mmorpgs where you actually pay monthly fees to play are much better exploit/cheat protection wise.

I've been playing that game for 5 hours today... the only reason i got off it was because my *** was starting to hurt and the darkness was starting to have a fight with my cable line.... then i noticed it was 8 pm =/
