I haven't been on the realms in a while. I just logged on and went to the GAT channel, but no one was there! Did something happen to the mod or is GAT gone?

i heard the mod cant support the bot anymore, as it was located on a comp in his workplace

people do still stop by, but the bot is gone for good

That's cool, I liked GAT the way it was a long time ago, it's closer to how it was now.
I really hated that whole moderator crap. :P Thanks.

xeyloderixed basically has it. I ran it on a comp at work and things happened that required it to not run from there any longer. This is what I told the other mods:

Security Audit at work. We are having to lock down alot of stuff. I'm guessing that within 5 mins or so the bot will vanish from the channel. Being there are two of us network engineers and I'm not the one assigned this task of closing down ports there's not much I can do. I'm not risking employement for a game that I no longer play (nor one I do play ).

I'm sorry for those that still liked having a moderated channel and for those that wanted it gone I guess "Wish Granted". I'm surprised it's taken 15 days for someone to mention it here.

Most of us that were involved in setting up the bot and modding the channel have moved on to other games.

Thanks to my friends for letting me assist in this 2yr project.

Kriet, thank you very much for running the Gat-east bot. It was a great service to all of us who hang out in gat-east, I really appriciate your time and effort, as I am sure many others do, again, thank you.

Although it is sad to see Gat-East begin to crumble, it was amazing while it lasted, and I understand 100% why you cannot run the bot anymore.
Heres to good times in Gat-East! :drink:

Adam is a great guy and I have been friends with him for a while. Maybe at first he's hard to get along with, but I never really had any problems with him at all.

The same Matt that had a MF'ing zon? Just curious as I didn't meet too many others (1.05-1.09) that mf'd with a zon besides myself.

I am personally done with D2 myself but thats too bad the bot had to go, it kept the asshats out. But I fully agree with Kriet job >>>>> game, thanks for the longtime you did actually run it mate, gat-east was always home for me in my d2 hc days.

I'm the only one with Kriet in my account names that I know of, but I didn't have a bunch of pallys...4,5 tops. Most of mine where zons, 1 bowie MF'er/PA machine, 2 cow running LF zons (I believe one was racing yours to 99) and a couple of others. None of my zons had Kriet in the name though.

I can run the bot. Between my roommate and I, we have several computers, and can easily dedicate one to running a bot 24/7. I know that most new guys here won't know me, and most old guys won't remember me, but I've always supported GAT and I hate to see the bot go. I don't know anything about running it, and I couldn't do the work of modding it by myself, but if someone (plural most likely) would be willing to share the work of modding and stuff, I'd be willing to host the bot. Kriet would just need to help me get it set up. I haven't played since 1.09, but the website for users to register to get into the channel seemed to work. If there are any better methods, those could be used, whatever.

I wonder if anyone is actually interested in the bot coming back.

Yes Kriet did a very good job over all these years keeping up the GAT channel. As a former GAT player I will say my thanks for those times.

Since the bot is gone I might stop in to see if anyone I know still shows up there ;).

Couple of things....

1. To really express the thanks that Kriet deserves for his job done over the past couple of years, well, I do not really know where to begin. His dedication tot he project was nothing short of amazing.

2. GAT is certainly not dead. Far from it. Most of the crew that I played with has moved to other games. That is actually why we decided to stop moderating the channel. It is a discussion we have been having "off and on" for about 6-8 months now.
A few of us are testing WoW and those who are not are still very involved in the MMORPG space currently.

3. The registration website has been disabled currently and there are no plans to bring it back at this time.

4. To answer neutralmilkhotel's question about how to make it work... I originally created the system using a MySQL database, php and X-Bot. The original website was a php script I coded based on some tutorials at phpfreaks.com. If I had to do it again, I would tie it to a forum software package. Likely InvisionPowerBoard as it has a good SDK package which makes integration easier. I have "played around" with this before and it is not that hard to do.

5. As for "what's next" GAT has always just been about a place for friends to gather. I believe the duration of the official channel spoke to the character of the people involved. The ability for the group to attract others was based on the personality and character of those at GAT's core. A group I still find myself honored to have gotten to know.
However, I have always heartily encouraged off-shoots and other groups to start their own channels. There is no reason why those who still desire a channel could not start their own now.

That all being said, the old GAT crew has decided to pass the torch at this point and stop manning the watchtowers. Our interests have led us in new directions. Obviously Blizzard's choices on how channels operate was likely the deathknell for many of the battle.net communities, but luckily GAT has proven itself stronger than just battle.net and for that, I am thankful.
