Can a necro work all the way to act 5 hell without using any gear? I'm going to try so if anyone could help thx.

Killing would be oh so slow, but i believe it can be done.
I took a lvl 65 necro with damn near -100 resists through a4 of hell with little problems. This was hcl mind you and was a bone necro (no marrows) just a whole lotta bone prisons. Although, one good lag spike and my deeds would of been remembered for sure

The challenge I had was:

Naked Summoner (Commando), Charms = Allowed, Under 1 Hour do a baal run.

I didnt have gold for merc, thouhg :rant:

I got all the way in less than 45 to Lister of 8 skeles, 8 mages, and some odd revived or something like that using well placed curses and such.

Lister = Pwned me. They regened to fast. The only way to do it is a strong merc with Prevent Monster Heal.

I was under the distinct impression that it does.

I have PMH on my Merc and he chops through fast regenerating monsters such as the council members and Lister like if they were butter. And the polearm he is using only has about 300 max damage tops.

Its a Might Merc at lvl 87 so even with a 300 dmg weap when you add in Might aura the Merc tops out at about 2000 dmg. and then ofcourse I would Amp everything in sight. But I know that without PMH my Merc would probably get his *** handed to him many times when fighting a lot of those regenerating Super uniques.

Psn damage works fine with a Merc too. Mercs can use just about anything the same way as any other character except for those items that have charges (teleport and so on) or are specific to certain characters.
