Just curious as to what everyone thinks is the best item in the game? I have finally decided that ths shako is, with a perfect Mara's a close second. Was wondering what you folks thought.

Imagine that in any of the following forms: War Pike, Thunder Maul, Colossus Sword/Blade, Berserker Axe.

Now imagine the weapon 40/15max'd x 2. Or Ohm-Ohm'd. or 30max-30max'd.

Otherwise, if talking uniques... I like Death's Fathom.

Excluding charms, I would have to say shaftstop. It's ridiculously useful. You can use it at lvl 38 and it can go the whole game. I almost wet myself when i found one of these in Hardcore. In softcore, it doesn't really matter because softcore is lame-o.

short seccond is hell forge hammer and then horadric staff (completed is a damn fine weapon in acts 1-2)

Most you can get ina proper pvp setup with botd is 50%. With death cleaver and highlords you can get 95% which is the cap

Of course the best item differs from character to character, but I'll engage in this anyway. I think a perfect Mara's is waaay over-rated. I just had someone today trade me a rare ammy far better than any Mara, especially since I only use Paladin def aura's.

Stats:
+2 def aura (wish it was 3!)
+20% all resistances
teleport (20 charges)
+10 attack rating (or some junk I can't remember)

The only ammy better than that for my char would be a Seraph's Hymn, and I would lose my teleport (for those sticky situations) unless I had Enigma, and then I'd have to sacrifice not wearing other and better armor.

The best all-around item for every character is the annihilus, because within it's class (charms) it is far superior to all the rest, and no one has to sacrifice anything to use it.

With tweaking, I think a rare circlet or rare ammy would be the best item in the game. It would would beat shako hands down.

For example:
Rare circlet class helm:
+2 skills (insert your class)
30% faster run/walk (or fastcast(?) if a sorc)
Huge life
Huge mana (if your class calls for it)
Huge resists
Huge leech (if you need)
Huge Dex
Huge Str
Huge Magic Find
2 sockets (I think they can have 2, otherwise one)

Take your pick, and max out the number of rare mods (I'm not sure what max number of mods is, 6 or 7 now?)

Similar ammy (most of the same stats can spawn on ammies).

A proper one of those would even beat anihilus, imo, except they're not as portable.

no contest

you can make breast plate light plate to save alot of str
or use high elite light or heavy armors for huge defense

oh and +1 teleport makes any build have huge mobility advantage

anything that comes close near is chains of honor

overall these 2 items are the best

gives you almost everything you need

duh, this is obvious... the Horadric Cube is by far the best item in the game... on top of all the uber leet gear you can craft with it, it's also the only practical (ok, i'm stretching practical) way of getting your enigmas, botds etc etc.

And the best part- without it, you'd never get out of a2 norm! :D

I still say full juvs have saved your life more often than being able to teleport.

I found a near perfect crown of ages (13/29/2)...then I cried when I A) didn't have anywhere near the strength, and B) needed the 100 mana (eliminating either -15ing it or saphiring it). It's SUCH an insanely better than shako item ^^

well the deal here is purple pots are easy to come by. find a gem buy some mana and some health, the badda bing theres you juvie. not so easy to level at higher levels. thats whats nice with the anni charm. the other melee weapons do nothing for a caster.

My barb finds shaft, arreats, soe, gore foots doombringer etc very satisfying, but the same on my zon are not as valuable. Now that anni on the other hand...

I'd have said the best item is one you actually have and would benefit all classes. What is a necro going to do with a BotD Thresher or stuff

So I would vote for something nice and attainable like Duriels Shell, Shaftstop (each with a nice rune or jewel).

But if I have to vote for something that helps every class and every build, it would be Mara's Caleidoscope

1 free run every 10
100 every 1000
so it'll get you like 600 free runs in the trip from 98-99 (that's what I'm about to consider higher leveling)
The thing is, 600 free runs is like 2-3 days on top of a month of pure baals, just doesn't seem like a big deal o_O

Haha..where have you been living in the last 6 months? Pppl go to Meph all the time without the flail (well, technically it drops..but you don't need to pick it up or use it ;) )

Only because they get the wp from someone who has. :) The first person to reach the wp had to use the flail, so in theory, everyone should. But, that just takes way too much time... you know... to play the game and all.

My vote goes for Lionheart. It's cheap AND effective. I think putting BotD and such up there is not practical, because only a handful of people on the realms should own a BotD. It's a rare item.. which makes it far from the best.

Twitch is very sweet... if only it had resists. So maybe an umed twitch... hmmmm... time to upgrade my twitch...

And as for Nat's boots, I was running around a nm cows game (in search of 2 sock armour for a smoke for my sorcy with major resist issues) when an higher lvl sorc dropped a pair of those off for me. WOW... i've never found them or used them, heck i didn't even realize they existed, but those are some sweet boots. My sorcy is in love... :D

You can only get 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes on a rare so the best possible roll would be an ethereal weapon socketed with zod with the following affixes:

Prefix: Cruels + Masters + Fools
Suffix: Quickness + Simplicity + Slaughter

That way you get 450% ed, + 16.5 attack rating per character and +0.5 maximum damage per character level (1633 and 49 total @ level 99), 40% increased attack speed, lower requirements and more damage.

Remove "of slaughter" mod and replace it with self repair. Make the wepon eth. Thus more damage. Make it Artisans instead of fools.

yeah, but on top of the "almost required" part of the cube, look at all those great recipes! I mean, the cube makes ALL the mentioned items (well, most of em) better... upgraded ribcracker is awesome, upgrade your twitch and you're having fun, cube runes to get your enigma (i refuse to mention the other one that people cube *cough*dupe*cough* runes for) etc etc etc

plus crafted items can be much better than most uniques...

No question, to me the best item is kelpie snare on a merc, lets look at it :P

slows by 75% ie
75% less damage/danger from boss
75% less elemental attacks from a boss

This is the same as

Increasing your speed by 400%
Increasing your damage by 400%
Increasing your resistence by 400%
Increasing your leech by 400%
Increasing your defence by 400%
increase your SAFETY by 400%

Name a godly piece of equipment that does half that.. :D

Heeeelloooooo? Has anybody been paying attention? Shako? Mara's? The best items in the game are EASILY throwing potions. But seriously how the hell could blizzard be so dumb as to leave them in the game? I would rather yet another cracked sash to put on my lvl 1 mule than something that has about as much combat use as a fart in the wind or perhaps Armageddon. But that's a whole 'nother tangent altogether.

My vote best item: Legit SOJ -sufice it to say Bilbo and Frodo knew what was up.

I play on my laptop=no mouse. I have evolved into a touchpad master. It was tricky in the begining, but not too bad now. Im going with the cube. A close second being the book of skills that radament drops. Gogo +1 skill point.
