View Full Version : PvP-penalty?

Really, I'm very confused about this. I'll note down a few things i've heard and you can say which one(s) are true.
- The PvP-penalty is 1/6
- The pvp-penalty is 0,17
- The PvP-penalty for non-physical attacks is 1/4
- The PvP-penalty for poison is 1/2
- The PvP-penalty for open wounds is 1/4
- Thorns, iron maiden & SoB go through the pvp penalty of 1/10 twice
Hmm...
Since I'm not much on PvP I can only really say that the generic PvP penalty is 1/6 (rounded to 0.17). AFAIK that applies to all damage types, although I'm not certain.
The penalty on Open Wounds is 1/4 in PvP.
Thorns and similar abilities are pointless beyond all belief in PvP, because they work on the damage dealt (which is reduced to 1/6 in PvP, of course), and then have their own penalty applied on the reflected damage! Silly, silly Blizzard...
If anyone knows better feel free to correct me on this :)

If I don't recall completely wrong the penalty is actually exactly 0.17 (and rounded to 1/6 by some). Not the other way arround :)

Hmm, that would seem most illogical. It'd be like saying that someone cut a pie into 3 slices of .33 and the extras disappeared instead of just 3 1/3rds.
But then again, in Blizzard formulae, a bunch of entire pies have disappeared.
Meh, you're probably right, but there are more differences in damage because of display bugs than because of 1/6th instead of .17.

Not really. The game checks for all sort of different situations and each gives a percentage value by which to scale damage. For PvP, it is 17, hence the damage is cut to 17%.

I'm still quite curious to know what penalty elemental attacks and poison go through. I can help testing if that's needed.

All type of damage should be modified by the same ammount, regardless of type.

Alright then :drink: though i've seen 25% for elemental many times, i'll see that as crap from now on then.
Is throwing "fixed" now?

Throwing??
That it goes through 1/2 instead of 1/4 in .09. And summons too i think.
I tested poison nova, 1/4 pvp penalty :spy:
Hmm...I took a naked character with a 100 pdsc and whacked another naked char (had 30 resists from the anya) and it did 12 damage. So I'm assuming that pvp hit of .17 applies to poison, at least with charms (17 damage -30% = 11.9, which would be 11 damage plus the 1 my punch did). It did 18 after I killed the other char to trigger the anya bug.

i have also heard people doing test and getting 25% for some of their elemental attacks.
i personally beileve it to be 17% across the board,
Soepgroente is getting 25% from psn nova, are u testing .09?
why are people occasionally saying 25% from their observations? was that in the beta? WTH?
Jarulf isn't it nicer posting here then bnet forums. I didn't know there could be such an intelligence differencial.
To reaffirm his statements, yes 17%, though I think thorns gets nerfed to 1/10.

Didn't know that. Basically ALL PvP is done by the same routine though, even for missile attacks, so it seems odd that it could be different.

Yes, the poison is scaled by 17% too. As I said, all damage is. For poison the damage rate is what is modified, the duration stays the same.

I think that would be more of an issue of perhaps not correct damage listed for elemental atatcks that are continously, like firewall, or?

I tested it with poison nova, on battle.net realms 1.10. My friend slapped on 120% poison resistance (which was necesarry since i was using -41 on death's web to get a nice 2903-3096 damage) so we tested it. He lost 187 life, which means 748 damage after pvp penalty which meant a rolled hit of 2992 damage. No i didn't lower resist him whatsoever.
I'd really like to test more stuff, if anyone is on europe i can help testing by being a punchbag or throw poison nova's/bone spirits/blizzards etc :)
*soepgroente2 in case you're bored.
