# of affixes possible on rares

I've seen the listing of # of affixes vs ilvl for crafteds, but the numbers must be different for rares, as they top out at 6 affixes. Does anyone know anything about this?

Rares : max of 6 affixes (3 prefix/3 suffix)
Crafted : max of 4 affixes (on top of the fixed properties)

I'm looking for information on whether or not the # of affixes varies with ilvl.

AFAIK it's random, without the Ilvl breakpoints of Crafted items.

Rare (except for jewels) will get RND(4)+3 (range is 0 to 3 plus 3) random affixes with a max of 3 prefixes and 3 suffixes. The data strucure that is used for rare items is the limiting factor on the prefix/suffix count. Distribution should be 50%/50% prefix/suffix until one fills up to the maximum.

Rare jewels will get a rand 3 or 4 affixes. This is also subject to the max of 3/3 and also follows the 50%/50% distribution.

thanks! so nothing but the luck of the draw affects number of affixes. (and maybe very low lvl cases where there just dont exist enough affix groups to give an item 3/3 or what have you)

This should not be a problem. I v1.09 there were several affixes added that would only spawn at low the low levels to fill such gaps. The variety may not be much, but there should always be enough available to allow at least 3/3 on any of the items.
