View Full Version : Remember When Lances Were Cool?

Kinda showing my age here, but anybody playing long enough to remember when lances were the best ww weapon you could find? High dam lances would go for $300+ on ebay at one time and I remember one going for over $1000...
well today I found a rare that is 298% ED w/8% LL. I almost was going to walk right by it, but I need to res my merc.
So I put it on merc who already had a reapers (toll and a bonehew to choose from) just to see if it kept him alive longer.
I wasn't playing when lances were cool, but I remember when martels were cool because lances weren't in the game yet. I also remember a couple badass barbs back then who were using pikes because they knew once lances were put in the game they would be the best.

Are you kidding me? And vs zons, we used blinkbat armor. :)
I still have 2 of my old lances, AND. a lance barb.
we used blinkbat armor.
And frostburns were the best gloves, and treads of cthon the boots of kings, and it seemed like everyone was wearing Tarnhelm, lol. And you could gamble up every one of them in just a few minutes.
Ah, nostalgia.

Actually I do believe spears were the best? Lances came with the expansion if I'm not mistaken. And as far as pvp spears were still not the best as there were still many good s/s barbs even back then (i.e. darius). But yes I fondly remember those days of 897 defense ornates, dual stat items, dual leech rings.

lances = pre-expansion. Yes, S/S barbs > lance barbs.
btw, nobody said that lancers were the best.
He just asked if we remember when they were cool. there was a time when lancers were godly. :surprise:

Lances and stilettos were introduced into classic in patch 1.04. The expansion didn't come out until patch 1.08 (retail version was at 1.07).

Yeah the good old times
The time when:
Russbarb and Gerbarb were in a race for first lvl 99. It took them months
A belt with cold damage was godly
Everyone was trying to get a 12 second Eye of Etlich
You rushed a char to lvl 29 with 2x soj for the lightning damage and then imbued two lances hoping for kings merciless
these days are never coming back :(

range was always a factor in dueling. a good lancer could kill ss barbs. just ww with them, but stay out of their range. was a hard technique to master. lance vs lance. that was hard too. you had to ww perpendicular to them or something like that.
ahh yes. those were indeed the good days. farming gold and gambling rings at low levels to get dual leech rings. and uniques with no level reqs. and everyone wanted blue armor because it looked cool. well at least on west. and fast cast was about adding numbers of 1 and 2 instead of percentages.
yeah tweaker sorcs were hard since orb could be spammed.
and once the bow bug was fixed, zons started taking over the duel field.

Just to take it back a little further.
Remember when you had that Arch-angels staff of apocalypse?
Anyone besides me ever find an obisdian ring of the zodiac?
Remember when everytime you died your body popped?
Run? We don't got no stinking run, we walked everywhere - Remember how far you had to go to get to Wirt or the witch....
think there can be some nasty surprises when you enter the Throne of Destruction now? Every level had the possibility of you getting swarmed when you entered.
Ahhh, the good old days.
Ah yes, back in the days when Kings [insert sword] of Haste/Speed was the best thing around (either one, thanks to that bug that made Speed swing just as fast as haste); I remember spending hours shopping Griz for mine. You'd do duribility shrine runs to boost your Thinking Cap duribility up for your Sorcerer, and took advantage of that <10 hp hit recovery bug by visiting the black plagues in the Cats, since they PERMENANTLY lowered your health when they hit you. And then there was that Chain Lightning bug where it got breaks in it if you took it over a certain skill level...man, thinking back, there were a helluva lot of bugs in that game.
I actually FOUND an obsidian ring of the zodiac in a barrel down in the caves, lol. Sure do miss the Royal Circlet and Demonhide Coat =/ I thought AASoA was a hacked item though? Been so long I can't remember now.
-Hal
yes, rumors were that arch angels staff of apocalypse was hacked. I think it was the number of charges though.
I had a rouge using AASoA...kinda weird when looking back at it.
and that greedy bastard wirt who you had to pay to look at an item...look what happened to him in 1.10
I once bought a ring of zodiac +18. the obsidian once i traded for though. I remebered when i sat 8 hours in a row on b.net spamming "Offer messserschmidts reaver!! offer....!"!11!" or something like that.

Let's take it a little forward, but not as forward as we originally started.
I remember the first day Diablo came out, with the god-awful lag that would not let up. I remember being in the Den of Evil, realizing you had to kill the Shamans first...when my friend PMed me..
Him: Hey where are you let's play Diablo
Me: Can't
Him: Why?
Me: Playing Diablo II
Him: Owned...
Yes, those were the good 'ol (and shortlived days). Back when there were less than 10 people on the Hardcore rankings and the highest was lvl 14 =D

My first D2 character was a zon. I remeber actually playing up to Act3 and not once using the "show items" button. I would just go by the shimmering on the ground and the sound items make when they drop.... Whenever I hear a ring drop I would scramble to pick them up. Sometimes it took a really long time to find those items I thought I heard.... lol what a newb I once was...

Low level leveling?
ive seen a fully synergised lance barb using berserk and max strength in 1.10... i cant remeber the dmg but it was insane...most things died in 1 hit with 8 ppl in a game... what about the duel leech prismatic mf rings from classic d2 :) iceblink was the pvp armor and sojs were so easy to gamble... i miss those days.... i still got two or my lance barbs from classic d2 using full old skool items too...

Yes the days of the stairs traps. Don't even think of going in those Kurast temples!
I have "fond" memories of teleportation stone skin bosses that I simply could NOT kill with my zon. Every time they were just about dead, TP, TP, TP, and start all over again.
Ah, those were the days.
yes, rumors were that arch angels staff of apocalypse was hacked. I think it was the number of charges though.
If anything were hacked about it it was the charges, as I personally found one myself.

My fondest memory of waaaaaay back in the day was when i first killed diablo with my warrior.
I beat him to death with a "Master's" Two Handed sword (funny how he held it with one hand?) I was surprised how easy Diablo was compared to, say, the butcher? God I used to get owned by the butcher... his room was scary as hell too. Scares me to think about it.
His cleaver was a good weapon for a while there though.
Jesus the Butcher was scary. "aaaaah fresh meat". Chills me to the bone. Never really realized how terrifying he was until now... I guess Diablo II dumbed down the gore that Diablo had.

Man Oh MAn...all this nostalgia makes me want to cry.
Remeber that one Weapon rack that you sometimes found on the way to Diablo? always dropped awesome stuff? and Diablo was almost impossible to kill?
And the Good old ICEBLINK....before they nerfed it. Whirlwinding and freezing everything solid!
How about the BoneWall Bug!
Eye of etlich was an awesome Ammy.
EVen +1 Cold Damage was godly.
Duel Leech rings with High Attack Rating!
ahh the good old days...brings a tear to my eye.

Come to think of it I still have Classic Diablo on my old laptop. Brought it to work with me and played for a couple of weeks not too long ago. Kept thinking "damn, where's all the shaman, this is kinda easy" then I remembered there were no shaman. LOL

Things I miss from D1:
- Potions weren't only a helpful item, they were REQUIRED.
- Everyone could learn any spell in the game.
- On your first attempts at D1, the Butcher and Leoric DID kick your butt.
- Finding a Unique was an excitement, especially if the item was an Eaglehorn or a Royal Circlet.
- Resists were a requirement to make it through the Caves alive.
- Veil of Steel. (Drool....)
- Some of the best music I have heard from an RPG even to this day.
- Playing at night and getting surprised made you crap yourself.... twice.
- Eaglehorn > Windforce
- Wirt, even though he was a cheapass, had some good stuff.
- And last but not least.... Farnham.

I still play Diablo1/Hellfire with a mod that fixes most of the bugs and removal of all the evil character-screwing effects (shrines of decrease max mana, black deaths...)
http://www.xs4all.nl/~a3n/
I wanted to replay Diablo1, but with all bugs fixed. The 2 best choices are
Hellfire Fixed 1.21 mod that fix all bugs but mess with imho "cult" things in the game like adriaīs "I sense a soul in search of answers" saying
and
The Dark fix all bugs but keeps most aspects of the game intact... xcept it removes CL and activates all spells.
I donīt like the removal of chain lightning, but the spell made to replace it is very good. Lightning is intact thu.
The dark is awesome and do have a lot of features from DiabloII, like Running, life and mana regen always based on vita and ene, a LOT of bosses, and the best, EVERY UNIQUE is very useable.
The 2 features that compelled me most to play The Dark over Hellfire Fixed r the ability to run and life/mana always regen stat based.
AdunaCCDanimoth
21-03-2004, 02:42
Not to be a jerk, wisedoor, but some of the things The Dark removed were horrible choices.
The Decrease Mana Shrines, negative effects on Uniques, and the Black death health Bomb all made D1/Hellfire interesting. Was it worth using that Constricting Ring for the max Resists, but with life drain? Damn straight it was becuase the drain balenced out the Ring. Life in D2 doesn't naturally regen, and that annoys me about the Dark that it does. I do agree that CL had to go though.
AASoA could spawn - I had one (and still do!) with 12 charges. The hacked version had 255 charges.
Remember the fear when you first heard the Butcher? Remember the *splat* as you hit the floor and though to yourself " hmm, he seems hard " :).
Hidden Shrine runs, trying to boost your Thinking Cap?
Ahhh... old times ;)

Things I miss from D1:
- And last but not least.... Farnham.
I felt sad when i learned that Tristram was destroyed in D2. I remember checking around the southwest corner looking for a skeleton that was around where farnham used to sit... surprisingly enough there is one not too far away.
Oh yeah and I remember that you could actually "moat" the butcher on a staircase and pelt him with firebolts/fireballs until he died... that or pluck him with a bow.
Ahhhh the good old days
EDIT: I remember i used to have the hall of the blind poem memorized... all i remember now is the part that said "vision milky, then eyes rot"... Man I feel like a dork now.

O god ya I remaber when the butcher was scarey. me and 2 other friends couldn't beat him. Or when I found my bronze short bow thinking oooooo I realy want that. Going down like to lvl 4 then getting scared that every monster could kill me in one hit because I was lvl 3 rouge.
Or in 1.04 d2 I hated that frenzy didnt give ed. 4% duel leech was all I needed in night mare. I couldn't beat nightmare by my self. I remaber getting a rare high ed anients sword. Then I gave it away because I found a rare high ed ex sword.

I actually still have a barb that I haven't converted to expansion for nostalgia reasons. He uses carrion, gale thirst lance, corruption grips, cruel visage helm, soul spurs, ghoul fingers, imp lock belt, and a corruption heart ammy. I used to love running down casters and zons!
I also have a ss barb with basically the same gear except for soul scratch and skull wing pavise. Those were the days.

Better than making a new thread, isn't it?
I remember a nasty pk trick someone tried to use on me in Diablo I. I joined a game and the sorc in the game said, "I need help with Diablo, take my tp!" So I took it - and the tp was in that little room with Diablo and his minions! The sorc had teleported in, made a tp, teleported out, and waited for some sucker to come down. Not good times

I remember back in my classic days...i imbued lance after lance...many with the mod "hit causes monster to flee" but then one day, I imbued it with my lvl 26 sorc...got a lance with 339 top dmg + 9% mana steal
I almost cried...then the expansion came along...and at best it was a second rate merc weapon...I MISS MY LANCE
One trick i used on the butcher was opening the door to his lair, lay down a firewall right behind the door, close the door and hear him die while safely waiting outside.

I wasn't around D2 then, I started about 2 years ago. So I have a few questions about a Lance Barb.
What would be the closest build in 1.10 to make a Lance Barb? Is it a WW Barb with a Lance? What would skills look like?
Could a Polearm be used?
Can someone fill me in a little better.
Old lance barbs had leap attack and whirlwind as their main skills, with mastery and BO I believe. Shout and Ironskin were disregarded, since defense dropped to 0 when whirling back then. They all wore Iceblink, frostburns, tarnhelm, and treads of cthon.
Not really much you can do to be like one these days, other than just make the typical whirler with spear mastery. Lances arn't as great for whirl now though because of the speed issues, so I'd make one with a great poleaxe instead.

Wel..blizzard did a favour for ww barbs in enlarging the ww weapons catalouge,in return for the fierce nerfing.Think about it, not so long back it was shael shael eth ccb, fury what else....
there are some ww spears that hit top speed lke upgraded Hone yari,Ariocs needle,Viperfork, botd ghost spear. But poles will always have an edge over spears due to their lower dexterity requirement.Dexterity points are hated in builds except wep/shiled duelers.
So make a ww barb, with max ww,spear mastery,bo & shout any of the above spears will work make sure u take them to last ww breakpoint (lwbp) with ed jewels/shaels.Just hunt for plus to stat charms to offset dex investment.
Rik
edit; u can get ur lance but it has to be a rare & it is rare.I havent seen a screenshot yet.I'll pay anything for it:
Cruel,grandmasters,mechanics warpike of quickness,lamprey,self repair
Basically if this thing spawns eth,it will pack ~1700 max damage,2 sockets with shaels will take it to lwbp, self repair, life leech..ohh boy.Expect final max ww damage of upto ~18k.
Side note - Rik, if you post again in a thread in which you'd already posted within an hour, and there are no posts from other users since then, please just edit the original post instead of making a new one.
