XFire covering ‘New’ Game Release?

Posted 13th Jun 2008 06:05 PM by Elly

Eric Brighteyes has sent word that Xfire have posted details of their live coverage of the upcoming Blizzard WWI event to be held in Paris later this month.  Not that startling in itself but they do mention:

Get behind the scenes with Xfire during WWI to:
Follow the opening ceremony and discover what new game will be announced in our chat rooms.

Slip of the tongue, accidentally or accidentally on purpose or hype generator?  You decide.

Update:

As often happens shortly after we’ve reported these cases the publication has either been asked to remove/edit or done it under their own steam, having realised their error.  The new text now reads

Get behind the scenes with Xfire during WWI to -
Follow the opening ceremony in our live chat rooms

It’s a funny old game isn’t it, this cat and mouse business?

It’s coming!  Does anyone think that the game is near ready once it’s announced or will there be a 2 year development? It is not like Blizz to announce a game that is 2 years out, though.

I bet they make more money in a month from WoW than they’ll make in a year from SC2 (or any other non-monthly fee game).

WoW has about 10m subscribers, about half of whom are in China. So that’s maybe 5m x $12 (factoring in various discounts and free trials), plus another 5m from china @ maybe $2. That’s what, $60-70m+?  I heard a copule of years ago that bliz was going to make $1b in revenue from WoW in the next year, so $80m a month is a reasonable estimate.

With a fantastic debut they might sell 3m copies of SC2. that’s $50 per, or $150m, but retail outlets take about 50%, and there are other % going to distributors, advertising, physical cost of making the game and shipping it, etc. Bliz might clear $20 a game sold. Which is $60m if SC2 debutes with record breaking sales.  Considerably less than bliz makes in any average month of WoW. Needless to say, month 2 of SC2 would be far less profitable, while WoW would just keep churning along.

WoW was announced back in 2001, wasnt released until late 2004.
WoW:TBC was announced in 2005, wasnt released until early 2007.
SC2 was announced 1 year ago, no release yet.
IF D3 get announced this year i’d bet we got at least 2-4 years until it will get released.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up for Diablo 3. I just took a look at Blizzard Entertainment website, and considering the amount of Star Craft material ( I
