Women More Hardcore Gamers than Men

Probably not news to any girl gamers, or guy gamers with gaming girlfriends, but more girls are apparently gaming online nowadays (doh) and they are also more hardcore when they are at it than guys.

In research presented Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Chicago, it was revealed that the interest in online games has increased significant in women, and they also spend more time gaming. The study was done in the MMO EverQuest II. Why they didn’t choose WoW with a wider range of players is unknown. Here is a snip:

“Players who played the game with their romantic partners enjoyed the game more and spent more time playing,” says Scott Caplan, one of the co-authors of the study and a professor of communication at the University of Delaware. He also noted that the study raises more questions for future research into gender stereotypes and cautioned that their results shouldn’t be generalized yet.

Some interesting points out of this is:

  • Girl gamers play more hours a week than gamer guys.
  • Gamers have over all a lower BMI (Body Mass Index) and exercisre more than average non-gamers.
  • Girls like to play with their partner.
  • Guys like to play alone.
  • Girl gamers under-reported their hours more than men (ashamed of playing?)
  • Men play to win.
  • Women play to socialize.
  • Guys play alone to avoid sharing loot.
  • Guys are afraid of having a girlfriend who’s better than them at gaming.

Well, a few of these points were not actually part of the study, but never the less part of the ABC News article about it. They also asked Christina Winterburn from theGirlGamer.net for comments, who among other things said:

“We’re still women. ... It’s just an emotional thing. I think we probably like to spend more time with our boyfriends than they like to spend time with us,”

* Guys are afraid of having a girlfriend who’s better than them at gaming.

I don’t get that. Every time I see someone who plays below the level of what I perceive to be competent (i.e. worse than me), I explode into mouthfoaming rage and cuss them out for being a waste of breath.

If I had a gaming girlfriend, the last thing I would want her to be is worse than me at gaming.

“* Girl gamers play more hours a week than gamer guys.”

I think that stat might be true, but I think the wording/implication of it is misleading.

I’ve known very few casual female gamers of the ~5hours/week variety.  I’ve known a decent number who play more like 25 hours/week.  So at least from my experience the female crowd seems much more concentrated at a reasonably high level of play time, compared to the male crowd which seems fairly distributed all the way across, so I can believe that the average number of hours played by women is higher than guys.

However phrasing it in a way that makes it sound like girls are hardcore gamers seems wrong.  At least going by my experience in games that don’t include evercrack it seems wrong… maybe I should switch games ~_~

When you start getting into the *REALLY* hardcore end of things (eg 60+ hours/week at the low end) I think you’re still talking about a very male dominated demographic.  At least I couldn’t tell you how many guys I’ve known who play that much while I could count the number of females I’ve met that play that much on one hand.

No, I still think that you will get more loot playing single player D3 than with a group. Like if you killed Diablo with 4 players you might get a unique each, but if you killed Diablo by yourself you might get 2 or 3 uniques, for example.

I posted about a similar survey done with Everquest players in December (http://www.diii.net/blog/comments/survey-concludes-were-just-like-normal-people/) which I disagreed with. Some of the findings on this one I disagree with also.  Some are bleeding obvious and would only need a survey to determine if you weren’t mixing within the gaming community, which I assume these guys don’t so I can understand their need to survey it in that case.

This doesn’t hold much water with me.

“We’re still women. ... It’s just an emotional thing.”

*Just* an emotional thing? Oh of course, women are a different species and heaven forbid they should play because they like the game itself, the challenges, the decisions, the escapism, the sense of accomplishment! Of course not. Women are emotional creatures and only play for the sense of communitas and to hang out with their boyfriends… I am desperately hoping that this comment was taken out of context.
