Torchlight @ E3

Posted 8th Jun 2009 09:44 PM by Flux

You guys were pretty interested the last time we posted news about this upcoming game, so here’s another update. Torchlight, the new RPG being developed by Runic Studios (the team who made Mythos for Flagship Studios, which includes a couple of the Diablo creators) was shown in playable form at the E3 show last week. Demo write ups, articles, screenshots, and gameplay videos abound, and whether you think it’s too cartoonish, you’ve got to admie any game in which you get a backpack-wearing wolf minion? The E3 trailer is embedded below, or just dive into a google search for unsorted links galore. E3 trailer source.

I do think I like it. I don’t mind the cartoonish look at all. It’s a refreshing approach and does have the advantage of making creature design more perceptible. Besides I did like Fate, for some reason.

I’m just unsure as to why they are insisting so much on this type of game. Seems the Shaefer brothers can’t develop anything else. Hellgate London, Mythos… and now Torchlight; the clone of a Diablo clone, down to the fishing rod and all.

My favorite thing about Torchlight so far is that it’s based on the absolutely fantastic 100% open-source OGRE 3D engine. There have been previous commercial projects done with it, but Torchlight is probably the closest to a proper mainstream game.

OGRE has the potential to really change how 3D games are created, especially for smaller and independent developers. Unless you really must have cutting edge next-gen DX10-only graphics, OGRE will save you a ton of time and headaches mucking with low-level 3D code. It’s fast, beautiful, stable, and professional. And absolutely free. And compatible with Mac OS X and Linux. What more could you want?

We’re seeing indie games get better and better, and I think OGRE is going to be driving a lot of that in the near future.

Wow, those catacomb-like places were like EXACTLY the same as D3’s dungeons before they made them a bit darker.

I have to say though, seems somewhat entertaining.

Ok, I’m not usually one to troll, but this is getting ridiculous: in this trailer the game looks like D3 and sounds like D1. When the first trailer came out, I thought “ok, this looks like a game with its own identity, with bad graphics for the moment, but it’s only been in development for a few months” ; it was actually quite impressive for such a short amount of time, and promising, but now it seems like these guys can’t do anything other than trying to recreate Diablo. I hope they come to their senses and differentiate themselves, this can really work if presented as an indie game and with the right distribution.

I like it,  its has this fun anime/cartoony feel.  And it can help pass the D3 waiting time a little.  Cant wait to play it.

This is looking pretty good, but I think it’s funny how much it looks like they’re “lifting” things from D3.  It almost looks like Junior D3 from that trailer.

It does look very “mythos” though, and the stomp + the dual weild system with pistols almost screams mythos.

Aside from that I don’t think the Schaefers need to diversify much.  I think it would be very cool for them to try to add something to the game other than dungeon crawling / loot hoarding, but I think as long as they are creating fun compelling games that they don’t need to be criticized too much.

There are official forums now too, and the devs keep answering questions all over the place. Gotta love this team and their relationship with the community :D

You know, I get the feeling this game will cater more to the younger audience, why? because I’m guessing it will not be rated M. Since they seem to be cracking down on it (at least more than they were back in the day of D1-2) there’s a higher chance that parents will get it cuz it’s like D3 but less bloody/gory.

I was gonna say as a tongue in cheek remark that it could be for the children of the people who played D1 but it hasn’t been quite that long yet (13 years, the amount of people is a bit limited)

Seems like we’ll have mythos after all.

I played mythos beta for over a year on and off. I wasn’t too sorry the project was dropped. Really, there’s hundreds of games like that out there. A couple of character, randomized dungeons and loot isn’t enough to deliver anymore.

With mythos I noticed that the main plot was changing a lot during development. Or rather, there was no main plot, they were just making it up as they went - so the acts didn’t really tie in together or the quests inside the acts, for that matter. We just had to play the delivery boy, go to place X to kill some creature, collect 10 whatnots and go check a rumour, which always ended to be a dungeon with a boss in dungeon level three. In the early days of mythos, they did have just a big 2D map you could click dungeons in. So there wasn’t any paths, just random areas with (later added) straightforward paths going from city to dungeon. The world didn’t create any atmosphere, you could totally see through it.

I really do think they’re not going to fix the huge mistakes in mythos creating a new game from scratch in, what, like 9 months? This ship has sailed, you need something new to compete.

This seems just like a cheap parody rip-off of Diablo III. A lot of the areas, skills, etc that they show are almost directly lifted from what we’ve already seen in the D3 trailers and screenshots. It’s like they heard that the graphics for the new Diablo game were vaguely WoW-like, and decided to go all the way with the cartoony visuals. I’ll be very surprised if this does well.
