Everybody has been watching the Blizzard’s Art Direction debate unfold for Diablo III which upset a number of people in the Diablo community. If you are at all interested in reading about it, head over to the new Art Controversy wiki page where we have compiled everything there is to know about the recent debate, rumours and controversy.

What do you know about the colour inconsistencies with previous games, the “pastel” graphics, rainbows and bunnies? Would you like to know how Blizzard responded to the complaints and what other gaming fans think? Why did the Lead Art Director quit so timely in the aftermath of the complaints? Was it all just a coincidence? Are Blizzard still on-track with the game? There is now one central place to find the answers (or rumours) to all things related to the debate, you only need to visit the Art Controversy wiki page!

If you have been following the debate, and have opinions about the controversy with additional facts and sources then you should add whatever tidbits are missing! Mind you, while it’s a wiki and anyone can edit it, we won’t take lightly to vandalism. Added information needs to be somewhat objective, and sources and quotes are always recommended additions.

This argument is getting old.  Penny-arcade did a pretty funny, but spot on, strip about D3 controversy (it can be viewed at http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/8/6/)

anyone who thinks they know anything about game designing / development because they can use couple filters on photoshop are sadly mistaken about what the general gaming populations want nowadays.

people want more interactive / elaborate environment when it comes to action games - with more emphasis on teamwork.  having everything look gritty / darker go against such cause.

moreover, the whole "make it scary when things pop out of the dark" kinda ended with Doom franchise - if anybody played doom 3, both the original and expansion, the whole gothic, bloody atmosphere got old really fast.  and the title was not as acclaimed / popular as its predecessors.

lastly, the core experience of d2 was not in its "grittyness" or "lack of colors".  it was in its replayability value and well developed (i dont say balanced here for a reason) game play.

in the end, if a very limited portion of blizzard fan base want to think that they know what gamers today want better than blizzard, they’re free to think so.

but they’re not convincing anyone other than themselves of their "cause" with photoshop filters and catch phrases like "wow gayness".

i agree kshyll.  I’ll add this as well.  People keep saying wowness like that would be a bad thing.  I played WoW for a couple years.  And I’ll tell you this, the graphics in the game are not what I don’t like about it.  In fact, the graphics in that game are probably one big reason it is such a success.  2 reasons, one being that I for one got sick of the "lets make it as real looking as possible".  But more importantly, it lowered the computing requirements a ton.  I can play WoW on my 6-7 year old machines.  That is huge.  And if the current D3 graphics mean my current machines will play the game, then they are guaranteed that my household will buy about 4 copies.

One last thing, these dumb asses need to go play D2 again all the way thru.  There is a ton of color in it.  I don’t think it feels dark whatsoever.  They are pulling this out of their asshats.

But don’t forget kshyll, Diablo 2 had no lack of colors in the least bit. It was extremely vibrant in certain spots.

However, it’s convenient for them to dismiss this when they whine about wanting the colors gone for Diablo 3.

I am also adding in that I agree with kshyll 100% here actually, but having said that, the Art controversy article is more of a "legacy" for memories when Diablo IV is announced, 10 years from now. Well, not that bad, but it is a repository for the whole ordeal, who for some definitely isn’t over yet!

Having said that I agree with you, I still tried to write it as objective as possible, among other things, adding that comic from Penny-Arcade into it. The point with a wiki is that it should be objective and not ranting.

You are more than welcome to add things to it, or to write replies on the domment page for it (Discussion link on the top).

Likewise, if someone who hates the new colours feel I have parted with the people happy with it, let’s doscuss it so we reach a good, documenting tone for future reference!

i personnally get a crack pot full of laughter over the whole debate. cause in the end it doen’t really matter what form the art takes. people are gonna play this game. i for one am just gonna wait for it to come out play it and then cast my judgement on it. on another note my secret conspiracy is that soon well prob see a diablo mmo. bascially my whole theory is based off warcraft 3. they made a more storyline approch to it and poof a mmo came out the it. i can almost see blizzard trying to do this with there 2nd most popular franchise. since they are trying to make a more story teller’s aproach to diablo 3 smile

jaydub, that is quite true. There is a risk of a Diablo MMO. Still, it would probably be staying quite similar in shape and form to WoW, so the question is if the MMO they ARE working on is Diablo, StarCraft or a new franchise…

Diablo might be the most popular franchise in the west (after World of Warcraft), but Blizzard would be launching this MMO around the globe, and StarCraft has quite a following in Asia…

I hope we can get a glimpse of the next gen MMO at BlizzCon!

Diablo 2 had quite a bit of color but it also has something Diablo 3 does not: Light Radius. This mechanic did make both games pretty dark.
