Splash Images Retrospective

Posted 4th Jul 2008 03:04 PM by Flux

It was just last week, but it seems like we’ve already forgotten the fun we had anticipating and conspiracy theorizing over the mystery pre-WWI splash images, and the strange harbinger of a purple evilpenguin that accompanied them.

If you want to relive those days, or you weren’t following that closely as the mystery unfolded, we’ve completely updated the Splash Image Article we kept rolling each day last week. It contains all the splash images in order, along with the prevalent theories and debates that had hundreds of anticipating fans crowding the forums each night at midnight Blizzard time, when the new splash image was about to be revealed.

While the correct interpretation of the main splash images is now pretty clear, (D3 FTW!!) there’s still no official word on what the purple “evilpenguin” represented, or why the six numbers from Lost were included in the file names. None of the D3 team guys knew anything about it when they were asked at the WWI, and it might just have been an inside joke by the Blizzard web team.

Penguins live in the south, otherwise I would point it to Blizzard North for leaving the Diablo franchise.

Someone mentioned that Blizzard North was originally named Condor which would explain the penguin or condor image.

Just a note, in Cain’s journal on the official D3 page, all the runes that were on the splash are written in blood. It’s either page 11 or 13, I can’t remember.

[QUOTE=CanAbyss;6587128]Someone mentioned that Blizzard North was originally named Condor which would explain the penguin or condor image.

The company max/erich/david founded, while creating D1, was named Condor. they changed the name when they were purchased by Blizzard and merged with the company to become blizzard north.

How does a cartoonish purple penguin, named “evilpenguin” in the title, relate to a condor in any way? Condors are flighted birds with long wings; below is a render of the vulture demon from d2, for the sake of comparison. I can’t see the condor company name as anything but a coincidence, and I don’t think there would have been references back to early bliz north activities in the D3 preview/promo. They don’t want fans thinking about the d1/d2/d2x designers who left.
