  • Diablo III looked great at BlizzCon, but we know that there’s still a great deal of work to be finished on the project, a point driven home by the fact that Blizzard’s employment page still has a considerable (worrying?) number of key jobs open on the D3 Team. They’re not just “3rd assistant programmer” type openings either; 4 of the positions begin with the word “senior” and Blizzard is still actively looking for a new art director, a position which opened up back in August when Brian Morrisroe left the company.
  • GamerZines are free, downloadable, .pdf format gaming magazines. They look like any other gaming magazine, with short game bits, feature articles, and ads, but they are digital, so they have animations and trailers embedded in the pages, along with other nifty features. The latest issue features Diablo III on the cover, and has a lot of post-Blizzcon info about D3, as well as SC2 and WoW. There are numerous Diablo 3 screenshots (none are new, despite the “exclusive” tags on most of them), some good info about the game, and even a short interview (text or audio) with Jay Wilson. Download the 30meg file here.
  • The SF Examiner’s games blog has a post about the high standard D3 has to meet, illustrated by the Seven Reasons why Diablo II Kicked Butt!

I wonder if Blizzard has high qualifications or standards for these positions, especially the art director… I’m sure they’ve atleast received a few resumes.

“Seven Reasons why D2 kicked butt.” Most of these reasons are so very very wrong. Where to begin…

Class synergy—The classes work TOO well together. The example given (necro’s minions helped by pally auras) is the type of thing that makes the game ridiculously easy. Even untweaked parties on bnet plow through an area in seconds obliterating every enemy in sight.

Rogue-like random dungeons and land masses—These randomized areas are meaningless because mostly everyone only goes through them once, if at all, and then spends the bulk of their time doing NON-RANDOM runs like chaos and baal runs.

Difficulty—D2 is not even remotely difficult. It is way too easy, yes, even if you play solo untweaked. People who complain that it’s too hard are just in areas of the game they shouldn’t be in yet, or their builds are messed up, or they are impatient and expect godly gear too fast.

Great Support—Omg. Is this a joke? Great support? The last patch did absolutely nothing and there is no support in d2. The game is almost unplayable now.

Oh well, at least I agree with “Great classes and strategy”. There are many reasons why d2 is so great, but they got their reasons all wrong. Here is really why d2 is great:

-Fast paced progress. A true ARPG.
-Very likable drop system for many players.
-Some player-friendly aspects like having the skills easy to use, an arrow can pass through monsters even when they aren’t perfectly lined up, FRW and IAS to get things doen faster, etc.
-Lots of character development.
-Lots of fun uniques builds to try out including less powerful ones that are still fun and viable.
-Mobs, and killing mobs is handled great in d2.
-Lots of variety in items.
-There’s a lot of lore, the story is nice, good variety in Acts.
-Some good ideas for monsters and monster abilities: raising fallen mosnters, trouble-making bosses, etc.
