New Monster, Screens, Art

The promised Thursday update has arrived on the official Diablo III site, and it features a new monster, along with 4 new screenshots and artworks. The monster is the Dune Thresher, a large, reptilian beast that appears to swim beneath the surface, crocodile-like, before emerging to attack. Quote:

Blizzard Quote:
The news that a rogue burrower had killed a citizen just outside the city gave me the wonderful opportunity to see firsthand one of the more disturbing creatures we share this world with the savage dune thresher.

Long ago driven away from settled locales to the deep desert wastes of the Borderlands, the dune thresher is rarely seen by city dwellers. Every so often, however, whether due to injury or old age, one of these unholy beasts ventures to the edge of civilization to feast on the frail human animal.

As the lore makes clear, these demons are found in sandy, desert areas. We’ve seen plenty of pieces of concept art of such settings (including one of today’s new batch), but never seen any in screenshots yet. We still haven’t; all four of today’s new screenshots feature the same Tristram dungeons/monsters/characters we’ve seen since the WWI, but they do show some nicely-bloody action scenes.

I’m not sure if it’s noteworthy, but there’s a skeleton of one of these guys in front of Caldeum at 1:00 on Diablo3.com’s teaser cinematic.

old Jerhyn: I need your help brave hero! my precious gem of the desret, Lut Gholein, is in peril due to Sand Thresers attacks! If you can prove to me you killed 20 of those monstrosities I’ll grant you passage to the east/west! What? you want something from my immensely large and fully stocked treasure room? Don’t be silly now, just go and do as you are told. Now that’s a good doggie.

Aww maaaaaaaaaan. You’re telling me there’s sand threshers AND those walking trees, and BOTH are reportedly eating up citizens? Jeeze. First the walking trees, and now this. How are people supposed to get to work?

Hehe. If we killed 20 monsters for a quest it would take less than 5 seconds.

I am sure the side quests will most often bee more inventive than anything HGL had produced.
