More D2 Classes Playable in D3?

GamesRadar.com has put up their preview of Diablo III, and goes through things we know, and things they think. They don’t seem to think that Diablo III uses Havok, and the preview itself is mostly a re-hash of info we have reported on in the past, accompanied by GR’s expert opinions. It’s all a good read, if you already have read it all. The third page of the article also contains a small Q&A session, which has some interesting topics:

  • Co-op and Single Player
  • Banned Health Potions
  • Old Characters Brought In
  • 3 Years of What?
  • Appreciate Community Feedback

The best little tidbit is the following:

Blizzard Quote:
PCG: Any one big thing you wish you’d had the chance to talk about but didn’t?

Jay Wilson: I wish people had asked a few more story questions, because we’re bringing back a lot of characters from the previous games. The Barbarian has his own story, and it’s actually meant to be the same Barbarian from D2, the same person. A lot of those characters, we’re trying to pull forward and give them a real place in the Diablo universe - a history and a feeling of depth that I don’t think the previous games have done enough justice to. It’s a great universe with the coolest lore, and we really want to make sure this game serves that.

Something that sounds a bit like we might see a few more old classes playable…

I wouldn’t be too quick in assuming that the other classes will be playable. After all, Diablo 2 ostensibly has Diablo 1 characters, such as Bloodraven (Rogue) and The Summoner (Sorcerer). I’m expecting most of the characters to show up, not necessarily as enemies, but as NPCs.

The Barbarian may well not be the only class to returnJay Wilson made a brief mention of previous classes in the Press Q&A.

Blizzard Quote:
Q: Is there any facility to port over D2 character?
A: We’re going to cross over some characters... oh you mean actual playable d2 chars? No there’s no way. It’s not compatible. Different classes, different game engines, etc.

Although the question was barking mad (transferring your char from D2 to D3) he mentions “some classes” when he at first believes the question is about playable classes from Diablo 2 being playable in Diablo 3.

Also here’s a statement from Brian Morrisroe at the Denziens of Diablo panel

Blizzard Quote:
You also start to wonder what kind of background they have? The wizard looks unhappy. These guys live in a morally gray area. We latched onto that for inspiration as a character design team.

Could he be referring to the Sorcerer from Diablo or is he meaning the Doctor? If it’s the former and he’s been mulling over his history, why he’s unhappy, there’s little reason to do that other than to better develop him for Diablo 3.

From the Lore and Environmental Panel...

Blizzard Quote:
I can tell you that the game starts in new Tristram. Just outside of old Tristram. Deckard Cain comes back. You’ll see some NPCs and a hero or two you’ve played before.

From an interview with Rob Pardo

Blizzard Quote:
The Barbarian was the easy one for us, because he’s one of the few classes that’s coming over into the new game…

Sounds damn great, just like the assasin was on Kurast docks on D2 while they were working on D2X and it became playable Hero class afterall. Too bad we need to wait like hell for this one wink

I like especially

Blizzard Quote:
...and a hero or two you’ve played before.

I am 99% sure he refers to the Sorcerer in D1. He does look kind of solemn or sad, or just concentrating.

Still, with all these "guys [who] live in a morally gray area", I DO hope that the Paladin is one to return to keep a balance there. I am already signing up for HKW again (was member since 1998 there).
