Monk & Wizard Runed Skill Videos
Posted 25 November 2011 by EllyWe have seven short videos demonstrating various skills with high level runes placed in them. They are predominantly Monk and Witch Doctor but there will be more videos coming tomorrow.
You’ll get a better view if you hit the expand button, bottom right of the video player. I’ve put just the first one on the front page to keep load times down. If you want to see them all just click the ‘Read More’ button.
The is the
Monk using
Deadly Reach with an Indigo rune making it into
Piercing Trident which causes the second and third strike of the skill to have an increased area of effect. Also increases skill damage to 212% of weapon damage.
You either love it or hate it but this is the
Witch Doctor using
Plague of Toads with an Obsidian rune making it into
Toad of Hugeness which summons a giant toad that swallows enemies whole for up to 5 seconds, digesting for 90% of your weapon damage per second as Physical.

Finally, here is the
These are recorded using the beta emulator server so this may not be how the skill and its rune effect end up in the final retail version of the game. This is also why the monsters aren’t attacking. Big thanks go to Risingred for recording all of these.

Awesome vids. BUT…where did all the wagons come from?? How is the emulator working now…I still cant seem to run it!!
Risingred, for those of us who are not spoiler-averse and do not know how to fully utilize the emulator, can you please take some screens of any newly-found awesomeness via the Emulator, and post them in a forum thread or something? Pleaase.
Incgamers has a bunch of videos and that isn’t enough? :p
No, half-a-min videos are not enough. Moar plz!!
Wow, you’re a hard crowd tonight
lol
what newly-found awesomeness? they can’t even get patch 5 to work, they force you to rollback to patch 4 if you wanna use it, otherwise you can’t get anything to work. I laughed my ass off when someone said “wait till they get patch 5 to work next week” and then patch 6 was already live.
These videos were taken in patch 6.
well then it must be an internal thing, because the last download they released on their site was 3 weeks ago, and that’s rolling back to patch 4.
If you insist.
Looks really cool
great vids, would love to see more like that. I just wish the damn game would come out already!
Aside from the Wizard ones, eh. The Monk’s deadly reach looked especially bad, with a disconnect between the animations and the monsters getting hit. Also, she teleports her weapon away, which looks worse when there’s nothing else going on (it happens in all the monk vids, but its less noticeable on a busier screen).
The fire kick didn’t knockback all nearby enemies, and the giant toads clipping each other was a bit messy.
Very critical, I know :P. How much of this is genuine and how much is a symptom of it not being the real game remains to be seen.
The monk feels kind of weird in general, for that reason. You’re picking weapons that increase your damage, but then most of the skills you aren’t using any weapons. All the combos now involve bare handed punching with some kicking, Lashing Tail Kick is just a kick, etc. I wonder if the animations were done when the devs were still tightly limiting the monk’s weapons, and thinking he’d just have fists or a staff. And now he’s got all kinds of axes and swords and such, and they aren’t incorporated into his attacks, which looks silly.
We are starting to expect too much from this game. Think – would you have asked yourself such questions if the game had been released by 2010?
Given the wait, we’re entitled to high expectations. But they won’t be able to deliver everything perfectly, lets just get used to that…and not expect a GOTY or a Skyrim-esque rating…because as long as it preserves the pacing and action and cinematics of Diablo 2 and improves on the look and (hopefully) the atmosphere…we should like it and accept it.
I just want them to finish their whatever-it-is-they’re-doing and get this game out. Perfection is not gonna happen.
Just my two cents
Actually, yes… but in general I expect a lot from Blizz and they tend to deliver on that. I have no doubt that the game will be excellent, surpassing Skyrim (and most other 2012 games) in quality and replayability. Indeed, this expectation is based solely on Blizzard’s lustrous history.
However, it should be noted that much of the cleverness of video game graphics and animations comes from graphical chicanery, an art which blizzard is particularly good at… except, it seems, with the monk. Blizzard games are remarkably crisp visually and the toad clipping and monk attacks seem unlike them. It makes me wonder if there’s a cooldown for the giant toad…
There’s a thread in the monk forums (on this site) about weapons and animation, with a video in the thread.
It is weird.
What I really don’t like, and I can’t say this with any certainty as I haven’t been privileged enough to play the actual game, is the stopping and starting a character has before they attack when they approach a monster to initiate an action.
This is kind of hard to describe but it made Deadly Reach not very fun to use because you weren’t guaranteed by clicking on a monster that the skill would “fire” at a correct distance. I ended up, after the videos, doing it manually by shift-clicking with hotkeys and it wasn’t very fun to play that way.
Oh, forgot, as for the actual gameplay effects, those are obviously not implemented. This was purely a visual display, and we have no way to verify that the visual display is fully correct.
The trident one definitely wasn’t correct as it only showed the effect of the first hit and not the two and three pronged attacks…
the only interesting skill is the giant toad
Pretty awesome. Gotta love the Toad of Hugeness and I didn’t miss the part where the toons are named Derp (but where is Derpina?), lol. Thanks RisingRed.
Derpina is here, in Old Tristram.
