Many Players Report Diablo II Characters Lost

The official Diablo II General forum and Battle.net Technical Support forum have signs that something is going wrong. These threads provide complaints of lost characters. The team hasn’t yet provided a response to what’s causing this, but Blizzard is providing assistance to recover those lost characters. If you are one of the affected players, first go to your Diablo II folder and locate this path: Diablo II\Save\Europe

Change Europe to the realm your characters belonged to, and write down the names of each of your lost characters. Then submit your Battle.net account name, realm and name of the characters. With this info, the technical support team will be able to restore your characters.

A bit of a Snafu while trying to transfer characters over to the PTR?? One can hope??

Could it have anything to do with the Virus Alert that was caused by AVG a few days ago?

Or it could be as SingleTMat suggests; that they are in the process of transferring things around in preparation for the PTR. *crosses fingers*

Personally, I hope it has something to do with BNet 2.0 myself!!

Was this an announced maintenance? Otherwise, the immediate thought that cross my mind is that they inadvertedly revealed a certain upcoming Diablo II patch surprise. Perhaps a bug in it that made certain characters incompatible/corrupted. Diablo II characters just don’t use to disappear like that if they aren’t touching things. :p That, or backend changes for BNet 2.0 perhaps, but I don’t think it’s close enough that they’re doing those live.
