Jay Wilson from Leipzig #4

Boomtown grabbed 20 minutes with Jay Wilson at Leipzig, and their write up is now online. It’s a fairly short piece, and the format is odd; I guess the italicized portions are quotes from Jay, but it’s not entirely clear. Pity there’s not some punctuation mark with which you could enclose a block of text to make clear that the words were spoken by a person? Oh wait…

An important part of any Diablo III game is of course loot - which apart from the story itself is the reason to fight foes (story? there’s a story? I only ever thought about the loot, sweet sweet loot, ed.). In Diablo III loot will drop individually for every player. That means that even in co-op you can’t see what the others got. But if they decide to drop their loot, you can pick it up afterwards. This actually lead to an unexpected social element:

Blizzard Quote:
- During tests players would suddenly gather around a player who was dropping items on the ground. Even if he couldn’t use it, others could. That’s a nice side-effect and shows you that we as developers can’t always predict the consequences of our own choices.

Remember that you can read all Diablo Interviews, Previews and Panels from the Diablo 3 Media Coverage.

Another interesting bit in the interview is this one:

...the developer has taken notes and has actually decided to change some of the things the players have been worried about - for example the very clean caves. These will get an improved look but it will not happen till the final portion of the development process.

We’ve not yet seen anything from inside any caves. I assume they mean the dungeons? So what does “clean” mean? They’ll be adding more rubble and junk on the floors?

I’m assuming the same. Perhaps more dead people on sticks.

Kinda wierd for an interview. We want to see the final class at Blizzcon? what about the 2 that are already in the game but we don’t know about them?
It’s funny though that we shouldn’t have know about 5 classes anyway if it weren’t for the slip by Jay.

That quote about players gathering around another who is dropping items.. What was so unexpected about that? They make the loot individual, but the player can still drop items to others.. Uh, again, was that an unexpected behavior they couldn’t forsee?

I find it hard to believe that they never would have predicted that people might still share their loot just because it was given only to them.

I get the distinct feeling that you and Leord were annoyed with the competition yesterday…
