Jay Wilson Exclusive Part III: Items

Posted 9th Oct 2009 10:34 AM by Flux

Today’s installment of our exclusive Jay Wilson interview focuses on Items. I didn’t get off that many items questions, and in fact tried to get another half-dozen quick ones answered via email after the interview, since my half hour phone chat began late, but Bliz PR treated that request like Bliz Tech Support does yours about dead HC chars.  So… not so many items questions. (We put a ton into the email interview MD sent off.)

In absence of more on items, I stuck in a couple of general purpose questions to fill this one out. Click through to learn what Jay said about the infamous “red outline” and to learn of, and join, the skill name debate that’s dogging the D3 team.

Next week we’ll have two days of big skill and character build details (very good stuff), and a ton of miscellaneous questions about all sorts of other issues. The full transcript will be posted on Friday. Go ahead, swear you’re not going to peek before then. You know you can’t wait that long. Also, the Bliz devs conducted a number of other interviews with fansites on Tuesday, so we should start seeing those transcripts popping up online at any minute. At least I hope so; it shouldn’t take anyone take that long to transcribe 30 minutes of talk, when you have half the conversation typed out already!

Diii.net: Are there going to be any completely new item types?

Jay Wilson: Will there be any completely new item types?... Yes. *laughs* That’s all I’m going to say.

Diii.net: Does that mean the Monk’s fist items? Or something else.

Jay Wilson: *pauses* That’s all I’m going to say. You asked the question. “Are there going to be any new item types?” That’s all I’m going to say.

Diii.net: Skill runes?

Jay Wilson: Yes. We will have skill runes.

Diii.net: They’re still being reworked and you don’t have any further comment?

Jay Wilson: They’re not being reworked, we had tons of skill runes on the Wizard and the Barbarian but they were so spotty across the entire class we thought it would be more confusing to show them off than to not. So we just disabled them all for the blizzcon build. But they’re all still there and they work just fine.

Diii.net: Are we going to see returning set or unique items from Diablo 1 or Diablo 2?

Jay Wilson: *pause*  Uh… probably. The game’s itemization is done fairly late in development. The itemization in general is done fairly late in development. So at that point we’ll be building unique items and looking all over the world for ideas and I’m sure we’ll look at the previous games.

Diii.net: Any changes in your plans about the red outline around targeted monsters?

Jay Wilson: No.

Diii.net: So it’s still in?

Jay Wilson:  It’s still in and it’s not going anywhere.

Diii.net: Ahh. That was one of Chris Haga‘s big questions of we fans at Blizzcon. If we liked it or thought it was too obtrusive.

Jay Wilson: I consider it absolutely essential for target selection. We tried tons of other systems, and that’s the one that worked really well. The complaint we get is that it makes the monsters pop out from the world, and our response is that’s exactly what it’s supposed to do.

Diii.net: Just as an FYI, our readers seem fairly unanimous in preferring “mongrels” to “zombie dogs” if you guys are still debating that name choice.  I think you said it had gone back to Zombie Dogs at Blizzcon, so of course fans then preferred Mongrels instead.

Jay Wilson: I like Mongrels better too, so I’ll use that as a weapon to try to convince the team.

Diii.net: I can send one of the PR guys the link.  Look, fans said that!

Jay Wilson: *laughing* Well that’s great.

Diii.net: Because if someone says something on an internet forum, it must be true.

Jay Wilson: Yes.

(Note: After some early worries when the Z-Dog fans turned out quickly, the thread I posted yesterday to settle this issue has turned solidly towards “Mongrel.” Though there’s already concern over what “Mongrels” can be abbreviated to, in order to save valuable milliseconds in Battle.net chat.)

I’m guessing they are seeing all the carnage 4 players can cause so the red outline needs to “pop” the target or else you won’t be able to see it.  Guess I’ll need to play this to really form a proper opinion.

So there *will* be other new item types besides the monk weapons. Let the speculation begin smile

Did Jay mean new item slots - in addition to the ones already shown - or just new types of items?

If the former, great, if the latter then that’s rather expected, isn’t it? I’ve yet to see a (A)RPG sequel (other than Oblivion I suppose) that has less item types than its predecessor, so it’s unlikely D3 would break the mold all of a sudden.

Personally, I’m hoping for a cape/cloak slot, I think it would look neat.

As for the red outline, when I first saw it my reaction was “that sure pops… perhaps a bit too much”. I guess one will come to appreciate it in messy multiplayer fights.

that question was unfortunate, since I asked, "will there be new weapon types besides the monk's fist weapons?" ...and there was a huge squeal of feedback from teh speaker phone they were using at blizzard, and jay couldn't hear me. When I repeated it, conscious of the hurry, (leaning down to be heard through the intercom feature on my cell phone, which I had to use so I could record it on my end), I stupidly asked the question you see above. Which, I'm afraid, allowed Jay to duck it by thinking, "pants and backpacks." I guess we'll find out eventually....

That does indeed sound unfortunate, but if we're lucky another fansite will ask the same thing and Jay won't be able to dodge it again. Given that D3 is an item based game and much of an ARPG's replay value stems from its addictive item hunting, that type of question seems likely to pop up again.

I’m in agreement that Mongrel sounds better than Zombie Dog.

I felt the same way as you guys on the red outline, it did seem a bit over the top but at the same time I can see how it might be necessary.

And yes, we’ll eventually find out wink.

One of my concerns is that different kinds of armors don’t make that much of a difference to your characters appearance.

Look at this page of all armor types on all characters in Diablo Wiki

http://diablo2.diablowiki.net/Armor_Appearance

Do most people agree that they look too similar?

I expressed a similar concern in the previous part of the Jay Wilson interview, as it seems they're going for a similar approach in D3. I'd prefer if the worn armor actually looked like its icon. I get they're trying to conserve the characters' style and all, but it still don't like it.

I too prefer “Mongrels”. “Zombie dogs” doesn’t sound good lore-wise.

Concerning the red outline targeting… how hard is it for blizz to let the player if he wants it or not? Im talking about a simple on/off option in the menu…

Flux, I have been following you since way back in the Decahedron days, and I must say I am glad to hear that we’re opening up pandora’s box with some discussion on items in D3.  Items and item finding have got to be the most fun part of the Diablo series for me - it’s what draws me back to Diablo 2 after years of hiatus.  Please try and keep on top of Blizz and make sure they know that releasing information on items (mods, stats, uniques, sets, runes, randomization, drop tables) will keep players like me excited up through the release of the game.

If you happen to get another interview, would it be possible to ask if drop frequency will be similar to Diablo 2 (i.e.  Will items drop as often, or will there be more/less frequent drops).  Also, have they considered whether the “you get your own drops” mentality will spoil any sort of immersion or fun factor within the game.  I’m bouncing back and forth as to whether or not seeing your own drops and not sharing the drops with the world will ruin the experience for me.  While I like the fact that they are trying to make things fair for everyone, I am thinking if some rare super unique item drops in a game, nobody will even notice except the person it dropped for.  Perhaps a system similar to Final Fantasy XI would work better - Items drop into a “Treasure” pool and divvied up randomly to party members - you can also “LOT” on items, which basically assigns you a number from 1 to 999 - highest number receives the item.  Once someone lots on an item, the only people that can receive the item are those that lotted.  I played Mythos for a little bit, and the drop system was exactly what they’re planning for D3, and I have to admit that I wasn’t a big fan.

What you suggest sounds promising to me. A good idea. *thumbsup*

@Flux - Thanks for the list of future questions.  It’s unfortunate you were cut short with this interview, because I would have liked to see the answer to those.

What were your thoughts about the Mythos-style treasure-divvying system?

I played only SP at this year's blizzcon. I did some MP last year, but it was fairly chaotic and disjointed, so I didn't really get to experiment with it much. Plus the drop rates/quality were turned way up in the demos, so there were always tasty loots lying around. The theory is sound; that's how HGL handled drops and I thought it worked fine there. I only see what I can grab, and vice versa. The only questions are what others have said in forum threads; won't this encourage party leeching with MF on, if they get drops no matter what?

I guess maybe my problem also is with the fact that if a super rare item drops, only one person sees it. There are two inherent problems with this: 1. Assuming the drops land on the ground similar to D2, items can get lost - its tougher for two people to miss an item than one. 2. There is no wow-factor. If 5 people are in a D2 game, they can all see the same drops, so therefore had a chance to see that Lo rune sitting on the ground and the message log fills up with "Wow, nice!" and "Damn, just missed it!". In D3, it's sort of disheartening to know that your party members could find super rare loot and you could be none the wiser!
