Greg Canessa Joins Battle.net 2.0 Dev Team

Blizzard’s Bob Colayco told Ars Technica that Greg Canessa (PopCap Games, Xbox Live Arcade) has joined Blizzard Entertainment to work on Battle.net 2.0.

Blizzard Quote:
“He will report to our vice president of online technologies and work closely with the executive team to help fine-tune the next version of Battle.net, currently in development,” Blizzard’s Bob Colayco said.

Now this is an interesting thought.  Someone with experience in Xbox Live Arcade and PopCap games now working on Battle.net 2.0 ... hmm ... Remeber GDC 2009? Rob Pardo criticized consoles for their lack of keyboard support?

Blizzard Quote:
Rob Pardo: There are are so many games like we make at Blizzard that we don’t take to consoles because they don’t support the input device, and you end up with crappy ports. That’s why RTS games never do well on consoles,” he said. “If I was them, I’d be sitting around trying to figure out what’s a cool input device that supports all types of new kinds of games.”

Shortly after at the GDC 2009 Luminaries Lunch, Junction Point’s Warren Spector slashed at Rob Pardo with mockery ... “I’d love to see what you guys do with the Wii.”.  To which Rob Pardo smiled, raised his eyebrows, but stayed silent. With the hiring of Greg Canessa, it makes you wonder if that smile said much more than meets the eye. Specially considering Jay Wilson acknowledged last year that from all the Blizzard games currently in development, Diablo III is the easiest to fit consoles.

A big “YES” on the effort to port D3 over to consoles.  It would just be good business, as Blizzard would be able to diversify its fan base and make more money (meaning more and better future projects for us to enjoy).  Also, not all of us have the extra cash to throw at a brand new, higher performance computer on which to play D3.  Those of you who are Diablo purists can just play the game on your PCs, there’s no logic in trying to be elitist or exclusionary toward others who would also like to enjoy the game on consoles (which also makes multiplayer games easier).

Good coverage!

Didn’t they say something about having a mouse and a keyboard on the future xbox? I think they are planning to have Diablo 3 on the third generation xbox, since blizzard was somehow involved developing it (and now this).
