Flagship Studios Closing

Posted 12th Jul 2008 02:50 AM by Flux

Rumors are flying today that Flagship Studios, creators of Hellgate London and Mythos, founded by the creators of the Diablo franchise, and (at one point) staffed almost entirely by ex-Blizzard North employees, is soon to close due to financial difficulties.  Their Korean partners/owners are said to be taking over, staff cuts are confirmed, and things look very grim.

Wrangling over their game properties and legal issues will dominate the news in the days to come, but however those matters shake out, this is a say day for the gaming community. Flagship was staffed by very talented guys (and girls) who had a dream to create great computer games. I was lucky enough to be invited to their offices for business and for pleasure, and everyone there was invariably kind and helpful to me and the other webmasters in the HGL and Mythos gaming community. Let’s wish them all the best of luck in landing on their feet, and coming back with future titles as good as their past work.

Update: And it’s done. We have received inside confirmation that everyone has been laid off and the studio is closing. :-(

That sucks. But maybe on the bright side, some of them will go back to Blizzard and work on D3? Bring a little continuity (and perhaps, some momentum!) into their old flame?

I don’t see them going back to Blizzard. But you never know. I think they will start something new again.. IDK.

Too bad, I was hoping there’d be a decent single player patch and hoping for LAN support… I would buy that game then…

After all that’s happened, I can’t see Blizzard as viewing much of the team as ‘choice’ assets. *shrug* Maybe some artists.

I never played HGL and Mythos looked to be another lackluster clone of the game they had helped to make so great.

Darn. This is a shame. HG:L was not that bad of a game, in fact it had just about everything that made the diablo series great, other than the perspective =P
I also know some people who played mythos, and it was actually supposed to be a very good game that was fun to play, i was looking forward to it.
I guess ill never get my two handed templar =/

That’s too bad for those guys.  But they are talented guys, and they’ll land on their feet.  I wonder what this means for HGL and Mythos.

If you read the financial details in the news, it says that FSS sold the rights to Mythos and HGL for additional funding. You read Guy Somberg’s infamous rant, and it sounds like the company had largely abandoned HGL to work on other things. HanbitSoft was making money from HGL in Korea, and loaning that money back to FSS, and seeing it spent on non-HGL projects.

I’d guess Hanbit thought, “why are we giving them money and seeing no return from it with HGL development, when that’s the only chance of us getting our money back?”

Hanbit can hire a design/development team in Korea to continue the work on HGL for a lot less than it was costing them to support FSS on the other side of the world. Same with Mythos. I’d guess the games will continue, on some level, but probably by different design teams, in different locations.

What with all the talk about how D3 is too colorful and what have you, I find it interesting that flagship ‘abandoned’ their gritty dark game to work on their somewhat more colorful one.
