Flagship North Team Regroups

Posted 11th Aug 2008 10:36 PM by Flux

The disintegration of Flagship Studios is now nearly complete, and the team responsible for Mythos has formed a new gaming company, Runic Games, headed by Travis Baldree and Max Schaefer.  Max was one of the creators of the Diablo franchise, the lead designer on D2, and the Lead Producer on D2X, and after helping to found Flagship and start up production on HGL, he worked mostly with the Flagship North team on Mythos, so his involvement in the new company is no surprise. There’s nothing official on Runic’s first project yet, of course, but the press release on their site promises announcements “in the coming days.”

Whatever they’re making, it’s starting from scratch, since the rights to Mythos were sold off as part of Flagship’s collapse. Since Mythos was well into beta testing it’s not unconceivable that the new owners will get a team together to continue its development, but clearly no one from the creating team will be working on it.

The WarCry Network has posted an interview with Travis Baldree in which he talks about the formation of the new company, their design goals and ideas, and even gives his thoughts on Diablo 3.

When was the decision made to form Runic Games?
Immediately after the dissolution of Flagship Studios, we knew we wanted to get back to doing what we’d started with Mythos. We believe that there really isn’t much in the market like what we were attempting to do - an Action-RPG with a large shared MMO world, and fast-paced randomized dungeon adventuring. Our entire Seattle team is really like a family, and we knew we wanted to stick together, and this seemed like the right thing to do. Maybe sooner than we expected to be doing it - but sometimes you just have to treat life’s unexpected twists as an opportunity.

Just for fun, what do you think about the discussion swirling around the “tone and color” of Diablo 3?
Personally, I think what they’ve done with Diablo 3 is fantastic. It seems pretty obvious that the mandate was to make the game look like a concept painting brought to life, and I think they’ve succeeded pretty wildly. The contrast and use of color really works well for an Action-RPG, where there are hordes of monsters and spells, and separation of individual entities is required for satisfying play. I can’t wait to play it! Blizzard is really second-to-none, and I have nothing but admiration for their work. I know a lot of people are lamenting what they see as a move away from the grim vibe of Diablo, but I think a lot of that gothic feel is really sold by a combination of sound, content and story, and the visceral nature of the game - and Blizzard certainly isn’t skimping on the visceral if the videos are any indication. I also feel strongly that there’s some pretty grim content they haven’t bothered to show everyone just yet.

It sounds like a project to keep an eye on, and our best wishes go out to Max in his new venture.

Maybe this is just ignorance, but let me get this straight…

1. Flagship fails because the company doesn’t have any money.

2. Another company (partner, whatever) shows up with money and/or receives the rights by default.

3. This new company decides not to retain any of the development team that had complete familiarity with the existing game and the upcoming game.

4. The old team moves on and founds a new company. This takes money. A lot of money. That they didn’t have to save their old company.

How does this work, exactly? Didn’t a lot of people make a lot of really dumb decisions here?

i agree with you, BUT it clearly states that if you are interested in partnership with Runic Games Inc. then to contact them via the email link on their website. im sure its just a start. no where near anything just yet. obviously they love working together and that’s why they formed a new company

My question is why do these people expect us to care after the abomination that was Hellgate London? I truly, honestly don’t have any faith in these Flagship people. They apparently had a religious experience or something shortly after leaving Blizzard North that made them suck at making games but still think they’re good at it.

I dunno, the whole thing is just foul.

These were not the people who create Hellgate: London. They helped constructing the engine/testing the engine, and then went on the work on Mythos.

The reason they left Blizzard is because their was lack of creative control/and apparent friction over the desired direction of D3, which has since been scrapped and leaves us with what they have now. Now they have 0 control over their own creation, and are flailing around basically. Sad.
I hope they make a kickass game and overcome it all, but I wouldnt bet my money on it hehe.

Malrenn what are you blabbering about? That’s not how it happened at all.

This is from Bill Roper:

"Our original intention back in 2003 was not to leave Blizzard. We wanted some level of participation and direct communication with Vivendi’s home office in order to offer our insight, knowledge and desires as to their plans at the time in terms of a possible sale or IPO of the games unit. The level of uncertainty back then made it extremely difficult to plan for our futures, as well as the futures of our team members.

And with no long-term compensation or employment contracts in place, we wanted to be able to interact directly with the people making the key decisions that could drastically affect our lives and workplace. In the end, Vivendi chose not to make that opportunity available and accepted our resignations over the matter."

The next day, David Brevik, Erich Schaefer, Max Schaefer and I started Flagship Studios.

Interesting to see how this one goes, not really big hopes anymore about their products or how are they going to turn out really. They need to create something totally unique and something that draws alot of gamers to their alley. Sooner or later time will tell - Albert Einstein

Yes, Morannaon. I have read that quote. And it pretty much says what I did without saying it directly. The fact is Blizzard rejected the original version of D3, which led to their departure. They were scared the "big evil corporation" was going to steal their souls lolz. Now they have a Diablo wannabe and have been stripped of the product THEY created.
And they may be right, Blizz may have become a soulless corporate entity, we will see.

Bill Roper doesn’t even mention this in his interview. Can you give a source to where you pulled this from?
