Female Monk Revealed!?

Posted 5th Feb 2010 09:48 AM by Flux

After all the jokes and snide remarks we all made about the silliness of the Jace Hall show as they pretended to film secret material that Blizzard didn’t want them to show, episode 2 of their new season went off tonight and… they debuted the female monk. Not very clearly; but the camera panned across a number of colorful print outs of her various looks, and we’ve assembled the best available images in the gallery. Click any of these thumbs for a larger view.

Let’s hope that Blizzard has something bigger and better planned, and that they’ll release some full quality images and screenshots later today, after letting Jace Hall get the publicity and attention for the big reveal.

Player reactions so far seem to be fairly tentative, with, “A blonde?” leading the early comments. thanks to FriskyDingo in comments, for the tip.

Update: Cleaned up the images quite a bit. New headshot uploaded.

Update #2: Full Jace Hall show and summary of the Diablo 3 content on the click through.

Update #3: Check MD’s post at BlizzPlanet for lots more screen caps.

Jace Hall Show. Season 3, Episode 2.

All of the Blizzard and Diablo content was squeezed into two highly-edited segments.

4:00—Diablo 3 design meeting is underway. The table is crowded with developers arguing about ridiculous things. WoW expansion will have a codpiece slot (for females too?). Suddenly Chris Metzen stomps in and says he has a World of Warcraft design meeting going on upstairs and that he, “needs the gun.” Much shouting ensues, Jay Wilson angrily asserts that he couldn’t give, “two **** about World of Warcraft,” and Chris retorts that Diablo 3 has been under dev for like 6 years, and that WoW is “keeping the lights on.”  Metzen eventually is given the gun, a neon-yellow plastic toy that fires suction cup darts, and he takes Jay Wilson’s pirate hat as well.

6:45—The meeting continues, now with Jay Wilson wearing Jace’s baseball cap and Jace wearing a cold, hairless head. No one else in the room has a hat on. Jay is their leader.  Jace begs to be shown some secret stuff, which he swears he will not divulge. At the 7:20 point the “are you filming our design board?!” moment that was shown in the season preview happens, and immediately after that they cut to footage of the female Monk concept art and game render. At 8:00 Jace grabs one of the print outs and runs for it.  Much shouting ensues.

That’s it for the Blizzard material, though the show ends with a tease of next week’s show, with Starcraft 2 stuff, including some sily jokes about how they balanced Starcraft 1 via what looks like beer pong.

I’m not sure about this one. first of the chars/genders I’ve been dubious about. Possibly since we’ve been leading up to the reveal and we’ve all thought about it and seen concept art, and possibly since I’m not a fan of blondes, but she seems fairly bland. Facially, I mean. Her outfit is okay, though she should either be sexy bare belly, or have on some chest armor. Just a shirt over her boobs is the worst of both worlds. Not sexy and not battle functional.

I’d say she’s too young and innocent looking, too. Doesn’t need to be old, but the male monk looks 40+, and he’s got some seasoning to him. Like he’s been through some trials and ordeals. This girl looks fresh and untouched by life, and while that works for the female wiz and her lore, I don’t think it’s as appropriate for the monk and his/her backstory. Unless hers differs radically from his.

I disagree, on the one shot where we can actually see her face she doesn't look like a young innocent girl. Her face actually looks rather mature and serious to me. Hmn... like a -nonsexy- Military Woman...

I'm with Leugi: you're makin trouble. I think she looks nice and that the yellow martial arts thingy looks nice. Form fitting can also be sexy. Besides you wanna see her birthmarks? You know girls like that are just covered in birthmarks.

Armor wise, I really have nothing to complain about. I’m glad to see a female protagonist that isn’t showing a lot of skin and the armor she’s wearing in some of the pics actually looks pretty heavy. You could obviously argue that a martial artists in heavy armor and what appears to be a skirt wouldn’t be very effective, but who cares: it looks good and it’s just a concept shot anyway.

The blond hair color was a bit unexpected. I think most of us subconsciously expected the unannounced ranged class to be the blonde, since D2’s amazon was. I’m probably reading into this too much, but if the female monk is blond then that would suggest the female ranged class is not, since two blondes seems unlikely. A dark-haired, middle Eastern scoundrel class would fit the bill nicely, though.

I'm expecting reddish hair on the archer/rogue. Since rogues had copper hair in d1 and d2. Although, the female barb has red hair, so perhaps not. Maybe the male archer will have Legolas blonde tresses, while the female is bald, in a sort of reverse Monk approach?

I have no issues with the hairstyle beyond it would have been cool to keep her bald as the monk. Short hair is good nevertheless.

The armor, while it looks awesome, I think there’s gonna be a conflict to identify a female Wizard apart from a female Monk in PvP as both use similar clothing.

A way to differentiate could be female wizards wearing long tunics, or long skirts.

Female Monks to wear pants.  I mean, unless they have underwear they don’t want to be flashing people with their kickboxing ... lol. It’s a bit hard I think to kick in real life using long skirts like those in the screenshot. Specially Seven Strike.

I actually like how she looks… I mean, she doesn’t look that young, and actually looks like a rather serious woman… (You guys really think all blonds are dumb? Come on!)

I also love the fact that she isn’t an almost naked stereotypical kunf-fu fighter. I mean, she’s a monk! She has to be reserved mostly…

And those heavy armor stuff look amazing, they give us an idea of how a heavy armored male monk could look like too…

I guess they’re not going for mysticism with her afterall, rather a more modern look. I didn’t expect to see a full heavy fringe and hair style doing the rounds right now in a town near you and certainly not out-the-bottle blonde.  WTH am I supposed to find the time to do my roots every four weeks!!!

They’re definitely trying to appeal to the younger gamer with this character because they’ve dispensed with the notion that she’s learned, well traveled and in any way experienced.

Thing is, they covered that base with the wizard, the monk, I was under the impression, was slightly older, the male monk is at least so why change it for the female?

But she looks exactly like assassin from D2, except the hair color.

The assassin has tall gelled spiky brown hair and the monk has flat white hair. Which bit's the same? The hair bit?

Whatever happened to the cultural differences the D3 teams was suppose to push? I thought each class was suppose to be a different race than the others. All the other characters are fine, but this Monk looks damn Caucasian, and we already have one of those.

More than one class can't be Caucasian? Come on now. 2/5 is hardly exclusionary.

She looks Russian, just like the male monk, so I don't see any problem here...

As you say, your post didn't show up, that's not censorship. The other guy's was removed because he was trolling. And yes censorhip exists here, trolls are squished, shoved into a small box and slid under a rock.

Fem Wiz doesn't look Asian? O'rly?

I'm usually pretty good at identifying Asian ethnicity, living in the Bay Area and seeing so many Asians every day, but I can't quite pin her down. Korean'ish, but some traces of Pacific Islander too; almost Pinay? (Which was no doubt the goal of the designers, to avoid making her look too much like any particular nationality/ethnicity.) http://diablo.incgamers.com/gallery/data/533/medium/WizardMovie_9.jpg

She's Asian. I just don't understand how you can't tell. -She has almond eyes and a slightly tan complexion, both asian features. -I speak Chinese. The island she's from, Xiansai, has a Chinese name. She's Asian.
