Diabloii.net Battle.net Archives

With some time to kill this weekend, I dug up the old, long-offline, Diabloii.net Battle.net section, and and wiki-fied it. All of these pages were written in 1999 or early 2000, before Diablo II’s release, and they’re interesting to check out now, to compare the initial plans to the eventual reality. It’s also a bit sad to see the cool features that the D2 Team worked on, but never had time to work into the game. Recipe Scrolls, Guild Halls, Guild Chevrons, Player Rankings, Arena Games, and more. Check out the (resurrected) Battle.net main page for links to all of those, pre-beta screenshots, and more.

Hmmm, interesting to see that D2 was actually getting a Guild and Arena systems, hope this time around we get both in D3… specially the Arenas since duels will be the focus of PvP this time around.

Funny how they didnt add those things to Diablo II but the diablo team ended up putting it in Mythos.

Heh, I remember reading that on diabloii.net, particularly the arena and guild parts, and it’s a shame they never went ahead.  Perhaps it’s food for thought for the D3 team.

Yeah I remember the over-promising and under-delivering of the D2 team. Fortunately it didn’t hurt sales that much. In today’s Intertubes/Blagonets it might have faced the angry mob of fandom +8000 and died a slow death—Hellgate: London didn’t get off so easily.

Anyway, I remember visiting various clan and guild sites before the launch and seeing all kinds of protocols drawn up around the promised features. There was talk of dumping gold in the guild bank whenever you came out of the dungeon so as to lose as little as possible in the case of death, etc., etc.

Ya, that group is very good at over-promising and under-delivering.  Hopefully, they learned their lesson with their Hellgate failure.  Though for me personally, it doesn’t matter if they did or not.  I’ll not buy anything they make ever again.

@Galtrovan: I don’t think these people will ever master that skill wink They dream and think up great ideas. The promises are most likely honest ones as as well. Unfortunately it takes more time to realise something then to dream it up.

Those promises are clearly two sided. As long as it would be clear that is an idea they want to implement its cool. It it becomes a “sure” factor, and they loose it, its not so cool anymore. However, the worst thing is if they both break promises and do not deliver quality on the things that are realised.

@ Knight_Wolf:

I think they most definitely will have an Arena of some sort. The only real question is whether or not they will have a Guild Hall…
