Diablo III’s Magic Loading Screens

Posted 30th Jun 2009 11:57 PM by Flux

A fan asked Bashiok about loading screens for Diablo 3, and he gave a very encouraging reply, then elaborated on the technical schematics in a second reply.

Blizzard Quote:
Bashiok: There aren’t any loading screens. Personally I think it’s amazing and I don’t understand the magic the programmers have worked, but the game is instant or near instant. The same is true for initial game load. Start up the game, create a character, click a button and the game world shows up. No waiting and no real discernible pause. Mileage may vary slightly of course, but it would (from what I’ve seen) be in the realm of a second or two second pause at most.

The keyword is to load stuff dynamically in a VERY optimized way :-D

Bashiok: ITS MAGIC

As best I recall from last year’s Blizzcon demo, there were essentially no loading screens on the demo, unless you joined an MP game and had to wait for the other players to make their character choices and get synch’ed up.

No loading time? On their supercomputers built for the NASA maybe, but we’ll se how it goes on my grandma’s old computer. Although she hasn’t even finished the first Diablo (she did play, she went at least to sublevel 3 or so, but she kept getting stuck because she saved the game everytime she killed a monster, so eventually she got bored and gave me back the CD), so I don’t think she’ll play D3 anytime soon. ^^

Cool and logical when looking at WoW and the amount of content there is without loading screens..

They probably keep loading parts of the areas to the memory all the time while dumping the already visited ones away or pagefile or whatever.

You’re probably right, Akse, but then again, for this reason, WoW is a very RAM-intensive game. I wonder if they’ll keep the same system for release because that would kind of tighten up the system requirements a bit.

When you think about it, there were loading screens in D2 only when starting a game or changing acts.
