Diablo 3 Will Have Several Expansions

Posted 18th Nov 2008 01:02 PM by Leord

Blizzard have not really discussed any expansion plans for Diablo 3 yet, which isn’t really surprising considering that the main game isn’t even in Alpha stage yet. The same could be said about StarCraft II up until BlizzCon 2008. Blizzard had mentioned nothing of additional expansions of the game before October.

With StarCraft II, the team have created a plethora of lore and content for the game, and they came to the conclusion that squeezing this down to 10 missions for each of the three races would seriously hamper the epic scope of the new RTS. As a bit of a background to this; they had originally planned two expansions for the game, much like Brood Wars, just adding a second one on top of it. Instead of squeezing the game down, or pushing the production time up another 2 years, they decided to push the story contents out over the two planned expansions, and hence they announced the StarCraft Trilogy at BlizzCon. They would most likely not have revealed their plans for having two expansions until well after release if this had not come to pass.

As Blizzard is now looking to release content on a regular basis, like World of WarCraft and “one expansion per year” goal, it would be UNLIKELY that they would do just one (or no) expansion to Diablo 3. They have already hinted that the story line will tie up loose threads, and make it possible to add new content, be it games, expansions, books or comics to the Diablo Universe.

Now, MTV talked to Mike Morhaime about World of WarCraft expansions, and he said:

Blizzard Quote:
I don’t think Blizzard will ever be able to do sequels of products like a “Diablo III” or “Diablo IV” on an annual basis, but we might be able to do expansions to those games close to annually.

Hmmm, is there more profit? In an ideal scenario, I think we’d probably do [expansions] a little bit more often than we’ve been able to do. But I agree — I think putting too many expansions out too frequently, you probably get to the point where people do need to start taking a little break.

Now, all I’m saying is: It’s quite hard to make expansions annually, if you ever only planned to make one, or none.

We are going to see at least two Diablo III expansions!

@Leord: While I can agree with you on all of that, that still doesn’t address the fact that he never said anything definite about the number of expansions being released. True, he hinted, and we should expect, but nothing was put in stone, contrary to what the title and last line of this update suggest.

I’m mainly trying to keep accuracy here, that’s all. Nothing was said either way. Things were hinted at, but nothing definite.

Well, if it was an official statement, with number of expansions and future plans, it would have been presented in a press release. We have reported on developer “slips” before on several occasions. Bill Roper was extraordinary good with that.

Read his exact words there, it’s 100% implying that there WILL be expansions (use of plural = at least 2), but that it’s not a given fact that they will be released annually, like they DID promise with StarCraft II. It’s obvious that their goal is to produce at least 2 expansions for each game (easier with Diablo 3, that don’t have the huge multiplayer aspect).

I’m pretty sure this isn’t a big deal for them to keep secret, Mike wouldn’t have been saying that if it was. Still, this is as good of a confirmation as their previous mentions of a fourth MMO project, before the official mention at BlizzCon.

You can’t really get more clear than this at the moment, unfortunately.

I blame Relic and their DoW series… but as long as they actually put enough content in any expansions it’s fine by me (30 mission for 1 race is about the same as 10 for each 3 races, so it’s not cutting content but more like leaving ppl that prefer the other 2 races waiting).

Fourth project? I count SC2, D3, and the unannounced MMOG.

Yeah, I assume that they’re also working on WoW2; I take the recent half-denial as a way of saying “that’s really far off, so you should buy WotLK and the next expansion too.” But it’s still very unconfirmed and probably only in a pure design stage right now, so I only count three “real” projects.

Blizzard, specifically Jeff Kaplan during Blizzcon this year in an interview with MTV Multiplayer, has stated their fourth project is a next gen mmo that is NOT in the Warcraft universe.  They have heavily suggested that it is an entirely new ip although not to the extent to rule out the possibility of an mmo in the Starcraft universe.  Irregardless it is probably on the order of three years out at this point so there is no sense in speculating further when Blizzard has said all they plan to say regarding it for the time being.

I’m glad we will be having expansions for Diablo 3. The more Diablo the better. I just wish it didn’t take them a decade just to release 1 game. With all the money they make you would think they would be able to hire more people to speed up the process.

@ nasarius: SC2, D3 and WoW+Expansions (forgetting they add content patches continously? they have a whole team just for that, and it’s also their biggest team). The fourth is the unannounced MMO.

I’m pretty sure Blizzard will try to milk WoW for all it’s worth before launching WoW2.

@ Professor12: WTB StarCraft MMO.

@ ThomasJ: Well, they scrapped the development when it was like 2 years in, so… Also, they didn’t get truly massively rich before WoW, which took a lot of resources in original development, and they ARE hiring now. Blizzard is pretty big right now. There are not many game studios (not conglomerates like EA) who supports 4 main projects parallel, together with an anti-hack team and a battle.net-team for development and maintenance.

@ DeusEx: Yeah, I kind of remember hearing something very similar to that. I think the actual saying was something like that they are going to tie up all the loose strings of the game, and give it a proper “ending”, but that new things in the universe such as movies, books, games are still planned, the universe is not dying.

In reality, I just assume they mean that they won’t be doing a massive cliffhanger like D1 and LoD.
