D3 Team takes on Art Controversy

D3 lead designer Jay Wilson sat down with the folks over at Mtv’s Multiplayer to go through some examples of player-modified D3 screenshots. Jay talks about how the effects were created, how they resemble earlier art design passes on D3, and what’s wrong with using that darker, grittier, desaturated style of art for the final game. It’s a fascinating read, and here’s one example, with Jay’s comment above the shot in question:

Jay Wilson, Designer of “Diablo III”: The key thing to remember here is that this has been Photoshopped. This isn’t created by the engine. Though it looks really cool, it’s almost impossible to do in a 3D engine because you can’t have lighting that smart and run on systems that are reasonable. If we could do that, we probably would in a few of the dungeons.

Now in terms of the actual texturing, this texturing, where they grayed out everything and it’s very flat and the monsters are all kind of a similar tone — that does not play well. It’s very boring to run through more than a couple of times, and it’s very difficult to tell creatures apart and pop them out of the environment. So those things don’t really work for us. A lot of the lighting stuff I think is very cool, but it’s also not very doable for us.

One other interesting tidbit, when discussing this shot. Emphasis added:

Wilson: A lot of this change is adding noise to the screen. If [the characters] weren’t centered on the screen — like find the witch doctor. Especially think about him as a friend [in co-op play]. Standing over there, you can’t even tell the difference between him and the zombie. And that’s another player, and when you can’t tell the player apart from the creature, that’s horrible.

You’ve got to think that there’s potentially up to seven other people in addition to yourself, and several dozen monsters. All that noise just translates into unplayable, especially when this starts moving. This texturing was actually very similar to one of our previous art styles. But when you started moving and the whole screen just kind of shimmers, you can’t really tell anything that’s going on.

Slip of the tongue, or confirmation of 8 players in the game?  The designers said it would likely be just 4-5, for better gameplay/party size, during the WWI panels.

I think the key word is "potentially" in front of the "up to seven other people".  I doubt this is confirmation either way so much as stressing the point on diversifying between all of the creatures/people on screen.

I am not sure why, or what causes it, but I am pretty sure that this unit/enviroment contrast problem seems to be something that comes with the 3D tech. Is it dynamic lighting?

I’ll buy Jay’s comments on almost everything, but I think indoors could have a bit less green/blue lighting, and I hope they cut down on the mist/fog/haze/blur, especially in the outdoor shots.

A shot like this, for instance, makes me want to turn on the defogger.

On the second shot comparing the outdoor scenery, it would cripple your computer to make it that dark with 3D lighting. To display a shadow, you computer have to compute where the shadow, will be, then how strong it will be, and then if it will be soft or hard shadows. Then it have to calculate all the other lihgtsources in the image comparing that to the final output.  If the art style was so that 60% of the screen would be covered with 3D shadows all the time, we would need NASA computers to play it or go back to D2 sprites and 2d lightning. Oh and if a fireball would pop up in there, all the shadows would have to recalculate each frame because the lightning enviroment had changed. And thus if Blizzard says brighter means better gameplay, I think I will believe them.

Flux, the screenshot seems to show the fog mostly in the distance. The area where the shot is supposed to focus is the little hill. I’d agree it would be annoying to have that much fog if you were there, but fogging out distant objects seems pretty ok to me.

All in all, I’m pretty happy with the colour, and people seem to glorify old games. That is why they said in the panels that they were trying to please old gamers and new, but know they can’t please everyone. This whole colour thing has reached fad-like proportions anyway, and deserves only to die.

It might be good that they answered the pictures specifically, but I’m not sure it was even worth a reply. In D2, there was powerful colours all over the place, why not in D3?

Also the "up to seven people" was probably either a slip or just how many they play around with now. I wouldn’t take it at point fact, but it is definitely probable to be that by release. 8 seems like a lot though..

Maybe i’m just being a troll, but should the main website have necessarily have a link that says [more…] in parenthesis, if there isn’t any more info in the contained link? I just think [more…] is a bit misleading.

I know people have opinions… however If it hadn’t been the color it would be something else… it isn’t whats being complained about that really matters to the people who complained… it’s the act of complaining. There is always some some people feel they just HAVE to express. Keep it inside and stop doing your best to make others feel ****ty.

Didn’t all the people that made Blizzard great, decide to run off to other companies?
I think the frenzied combat and looting can make up for the lame graphics. But, IMHO, the graphics suck, pull a Duke Nukem Forever and start the frak over. I want to see at least eight-ten different zombie models and much higher polygon game worlds.
Don’t even try to go into the crap about it being too demanding and expensive. My P4 @ 2.0Ghz, FX5200 128MB can run WoW. My 8800GTS Crysis box gets over 200FPS in WoW and it probably only cost about $800 modern day and a $500 box should be almost as capable.

Where is the blood and destruction in Diablo 3, where is the feeling that evil assaulted this place and people fought to their deaths defending it, where is the gore of battle?

Where are the piles of bodies that resemble Nazi death camps, the pools of blood… why am I bothering, Blizzard ante going to fix it and Far cry 2 comes out soon.
