Contest: Name A D3 Unique

Posted 16th Aug 2009 12:54 AM by Flux

As announced today on Blizzard’s new @Diablo twitter feed, they’re running a “name the unique item” contest during this year’s Blizzcon.  The official rules are lengthy and somewhat confusing. Here’s a quote of the relevant portion:

Blizzard Quote:
“Do a “RT @Diablo Win D3 prizes in the “#D3unique Item Name Contest – [item name entry]” You name it, others wield it! Rules: [link]” Qualified entrants will be the first five hundred (500) respondents each day that “re-tweet,” their answers to http://www.twitter.com/diablo, making certain to include “#D3unique” in their responses, to participate in the Contest. Responses can be no longer than 140 characters. Limit one (1) entry per person.

The page of rules is fairly dizzying, but here’s what I made of it. Each day during the contest period (today through the 24th), the first 500 tweets sent to the appropriate @diablo Twitter address are entered. From those 500, Blizzard will pick the 10 best each day. (“Winners shall be chosen… based upon which entrants display the most original, authentic and/or funny artistic expression that is based on the Diablo universe.”) Those people all win a Diablo pin (retail value $12). After the contest period, the best 5 item names, out of all the daily top 10s, will be used for actual unique item names in the game. There’s no additional prize for submitting one of the 5 chosen names, other than knowing your submission made it into the game.

You must have a twitter account to enter, and be a follower of the @diablo feed to win. You can submit your entry via computer or cell phone and it’s free to enter. Of course, just like they say on TV, relevant texting fees may be charged to you by your local service provider.

Ahem, you also need to be a resident of the US or Canada. Don’t forget you have readers from all over the world, Flux! smile

Edit: the background on the Twitter page looks really cool, does anyone know if I can find it without the text?

If only they’d hold the contest by a real method and not this $#*)^&$@#)(& Twitter BS.  At least I can count on this site to get me any info that they post to the moronic abyss that is Twitter.

Well, I doubt they would name items that you HAVE to keep in your inventory. You can just yell “Yuck!” and throw it away. wink

And I think it’s pretty obvious that this is for publicity. If they hadn’t opened a twitter account we probably wouldn’t have this competition right now.

Take what you can, I say.

From the rules:

c. All Contest winners will be notified via Twitter.com’s “direct message” system with instructions for claiming their respective prizes. To claim a prize, winners should follow the instructions contained in their notification. Prizes that remain unclaimed thirty (30) days after notification will be forfeited. If any winner is a resident of Canada, they will be required to correctly answer a time limited skill question in order to receive their prize.

Um…what?

There is one positive thing about Twitter: it’s slightly less pointless than Second Life, which had been a previous media darling for reasons that are beyond my understanding.

Nasarius- There’s a law in Canada about giveaways and sweepstakes. They have to be “merit based” or something, so companies tack on a really silly question like “what is 2+1?” to technically obey the law.

Y’know Merick, I was always curious about that. Contests would say that Canadians would have to take a “math test” and it really was a head-scratcher.
As far as silly laws go, that one is pretty far out there.
