Chests and Unannounced Classes

Chests and keys as we know them in Diablo II will likely not appear, but the developers are still playing with the idea of both keys and chests in the game. Our favourite Diablo 3 CM says:

Having keys that are dropped for specific uses, that have more story and questing elements tied to them are definitely possible. In a general 'designery' way Leoric's crown was essentially a key used to unlock the boss fight in the BlizzCon demo. So I don't think it's out of the question to then have a literal key be used for more quest-centric chest unlocking purposes.

That's of course completely separate from the generic dropped keys and their ability to open randomly spawned 'locked' chests. We don't currently have keys and locked chests, but... we're not completely opposed to them either.

Something I posted about a long time ago, which were just ideas being thrown around internally, is the idea of having multiple tiers of chests with subsequently lower spawn rates, and subsequently increased chances for dropping better and better items. At that point keys sort of become this unnecessary burden, because you already had the amazing luck of having the rarest chest type in the game spawn, it's probably not all that cool to then also say "Now find a key for it!"

Our dear, slightly sadistic, Bashiok has also made new comments on the 2 unannounced classes we have yet to see in Diablo 3. A Battle.net member that clearly don't visit any D3 community sites, like Diii.net, asked if 3 classes were "it", or if more classes were planned...

I know this is kind of a stupid question, but they are going to make more right?

There are five planned character classes. Two are still unannounced.

Here's a question

Do you think you've alluded to any of the two unannounced classes anywhere on this forum?

Haha, well that would ruin all the fun if I told you.

but it's only fun for you...it's agony for us :(

Ah right, sorry, I meant to say "that will ruin all my fun".

Look! Another one crying like a girl and running to mommy. BAD BAD Bashiok!

Diablo 3 won’t have a poney level, it’ll have a BASHiok level, where you flame skeletons and zombies with harsh words ‘till they… stop pestering you.

This post reminds me of my favorite Flux quote:

“Bashiok posted an interesting tidbit about how big chests might be handled in Diablo III. No, this has nothing to do with the Amazon returning.”

Every key opening every lock in the game is really silly anyway.

Would be cool if they do something where chests above a certain tier has appropriately difficult guardians that spawn with it.  The leader of which would hold the only key to that instance of that chest.

I kind of liked the Mythos system.  They’d have 1 super-chest in most dungeons that dropped on par with the bosses.  The key was dropped by 1 random monster on any level of the dungeon.

It gave incentive for full clears, and incentive to run random dungeons instead of just the same one over and over.

Generally you didn’t get to the point where you’ve cleared almost the entire thing and missed the key… if there’s 100 monsters in a dungeon and only 5 or so stragglers left that were hiding in corners, there’s only a 5% or so chance of having missed the key in a reasonable clear.  Obviously made up numbers but you get the idea.

The odd time you miss the key you’ve got two choices… decide it probably would’ve been a terrible drop anyways and skip it or search the entire freaking dungeon for the last handful of monsters.  Whichever is going to annoy you less.
