Borderlands’ Homage to a D2 Monster

Posted 3rd Nov 2009 03:10 AM by Flux

Gearbox, the creators of the newly-released RPG shooter Borderlands, have frequently expressed their admiration for Diablo 2, and talked about how their item system is heavily inspired by the slot machine system of the favorite title of many of us around here. They also included a monster that gives homage to one of the classic D2 bosses, Rakanishu.

The Borderlands version has a name that’s spelled slightly differently, and it’s a flying, fire-breathing demon rather than a squirrely, electified Fallen One, but it’s a nice homage all the same. Best of all, this boss drops a “cracked sash” which, despite the name, is actually a fairly useful item in Borderlands. You can see the Borderlands version of Rakkinishu flying and scorching in this video, at around the 1:40 point.

Thanks to GamerVision for the tip.

Update: In comments Noammr says there’s also a weapon called “Butcher” that has the line, “Ahhh… Fresh meat” in its description. K3wlz!

Usually get bored of 1st player shooters in like 5 min…But this game is really nice. Customizing, weapon upgrades, character select, not to mention the “comic strip” graphics which are way cooler than I ever thought they would be…Definitely check this one out!

It’s also worth noting, that Rakkanishu drops a rather special armor piece called “Cracked Sash” when killed.

I know nothing of Borderlands other than what I’ve seen in some movies, but it seems strikingly similar to Hellgate: London. The post apocalyptic setting with humans fighting demons, the character classes, their skill trees, the fact that most of the guns are weird, semi-magical, elemental weapons, etc.

Apparently Flagship’s error was leaving out wry, disaster movie humor and creating a world entirely without bright levels or sunlight?

With all honesty, Borderlands is like Hellgate: London, except actually good. It's a much better polished version of the same game, that's more fun to play. Though at the same time, it's more of a shooter than an RPG. The actual skills, items, etc are fairly shallow. But it makes up for it to be much more enjoyable as a shooter in general.

The bland, horrible, repetative levels in HG:L certainly didn't help it, along with the bland, horrible art style. Borderlands oozes personality from every orifice. And it has MANY ORIFICES. ;) It has astounding art in it. Great visuals. The characters have more than one dimension, the story is fragmented but it makes sense, and the game has atmosphere. These are things that really hurt HGL, because it didn't have any of those aspects working for it. I thought HGL was decent, though. There were a lot of cool systems in it that I wish would have shown up in Borderlands, and I hope show up in D3, like the item upgrading.

I certainly giggled when I shot Rakanishu out of the sky!

I’ve found another Diablo reference in the game - there’s a weapon called ‘butcher’ that has the line “Ahhh… Fresh meat” in it’s description.

Love the amount of style and class in this game, it’s just awesomely cool.
