BlizzCon in 2009!

Our sister site IncGamers.com reports that Blizzard just has confirmed that BlizzCon gaming convention, Blizzards own showcasing event, will be held at the Anaheim Convention Centre, Anaheim, California between 21 and 22 August this year.

The BlizzCon event famously sold out almost immediately last year when tickets went on sale, and to respond to the growing popularity, the event will have one more convention hall to host it's guests. We will of course be there in Los Angeles to convey the glam, and possibly new MMO announcement (go SC MMO!) this summer! This is the press release:

BLIZZCON® 2009 ANNOUNCED

Blizzard Entertainment® gaming celebration to return to Anaheim Convention Center on
August 21-22

PARIS, France -- February 17, 2009 -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced plans for its fourth BlizzCon® gaming convention, to be held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California on Friday, August 21 and Saturday, August 22. BlizzCon is a celebration of the global player communities surrounding Blizzard Entertainment®’s Warcraft®, StarCraft®, and Diablo® universes. In response to the festival’s increasing popularity, this year’s event has been expanded from three convention halls to four.

“We’ve been amazed by the incredible response to each of our previous BlizzCon events,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re pleased to be bringing the convention back to Anaheim this year, and we look forward to this new opportunity to meet Blizzard gamers from around the world.”

BlizzCon will offer a wide variety of activities throughout the two-day event. In addition to serving as a gathering place for Blizzard Entertainment gaming communities, attendees will be able to enjoy:

• Hands-on play time with upcoming Blizzard Entertainment games
• Discussion panels with Blizzard Entertainment developers
• Competitive and casual tournaments for players to showcase their talents
• Community contests with great prizes
• Commemorative merchandise based on Blizzard Entertainment’s game universes
• A silent auction
• More exciting activities and attractions to be announced
Further details, including ticket availability and pricing, will be announced on the official BlizzCon website, http://www.blizzcon.com, as the event draws closer.

To keep pace with the continued growth of World of Warcraft as well as development on other Blizzard Entertainment games, the company is currently hiring for numerous open positions. More information on available career opportunities can be found at http://eu.blizzard.com/en/jobs/.

It's likely SOME sort of announcement will be made there, and while a StarCraft MMO (or whatever that unannounced MMO is for) might be a good candidate, it's also very likely that we'll get to see what new WoW expansion will be released. Not as exciting as other prospects, but they could also announce both the WoW expansion as well as the MMO. As far as Diablo 3 goes, I do hope we'll have seen all the classes before August, at the very least. Showing the 5th class possibly, but we should really have seen both the 4th and the 5th by then...

So, this confirms the 2nd Exhibition Blizzard won’t be attending as the biggest one, GamesCom, is held over that weekend also.

What about WWI?  It was in what, June last year?  Will there really only be one big conference that Blizz attends/puts on this year?

I figure there will be one class reveal at each of Blizz’s next 2 conferences, but if they are announcing BlizzCon and not WWI, is BlizzCon all we’ll get?

As for WWI:

+ It was not announced before 1 month ahead of the event.
+ It has been located much earlier in the year other years.
+ WWI has been going more regular and longer than BlizzCon.

- WWI has previously been announced BEFORE BlizzCon announcements.
- It’s a credit crunch, and Blizzard might be cutting in on extravaganza.

Why is the byline “Paris, France” when:

1. Blizzard is headquartered in Irvine, CA
2. BlizzCon will be held in Anaheim, CA

And isn’t WWI usually held in Paris?

I would be very surprised if Blizzard didn’t do a WWI in 2009. It’s their reach-out to fans in another part of the world. It would be a little inattentive to forgo that which is why I don’t think they will.  I would also expect some sort of announcement at it, not necessarily a game but new class for D3. All of their exhibitions need something juicy.

@Kunzaito - I beleive it was 2005 in US. 2006 & 2007 in Korea and 2008, France.

There’s also a exhibition tied to a comic (not ComicCon) which I think they go to regularly.

This is the announcement from Blizzard EU. Which means their headquarters must be located in Paris France.

The US Blizz site posted the Announcment hours later from California.

Deductive reasoning.
