Blizzard Invites Fan Writer to Their Offices

Posted 14th Mar 2009 04:18 AM by Leord

Blizzard have just informed the fans of their franchises that their first global writing contest is opened. Fans of any of their three franchises with some sort of writing skill are invited to submit a piece of fan fiction of 3000 to 10.000 words set in their favourite franchise, and the winner will get a trip to Blizzard's headquarters in Irvine, California where he or she will be meeting the writers and staff behind the lore.

Blizzard stated: "Whether you conjure stories in your free time or write for a living, you’re encouraged to participate. This contest is open to entrants from around the world, and will be judged by Blizzard Entertainment’s own writers and masters of lore."

The winner will not only get a trip and meal with the Blizzard lore staff, but will also take home a Frostmourne sword. Seven runners-up will receive prize packages consisting of signed copies of the Blizzard novels: Diablo Archive, Warcraft Archive, StarCraft Archive, and the Warcraft War of the Ancients Archive.

Since the two other contests recently started by Blizzard, drawing comics and designing a Blizzard theme park, were criticized by fans as they were only available for North American fans this contest is extra interesting for non-American fans as long as they can write in English. According to the rules, a few states in the United States, Canada and Australia are excluded from the contest, however. This is the third contest in a short time period, but the first to NOT include StarCraft 2 Beta keys as a prize.

Ok, cool. Only Quebec is excluded from Canadian submissions. You had me worried there.

I might have to jump on this one, assuming I’m not ineligible for some “we already gave you free tickets to Blizzcon” type reason.  I’ve posted maybe a dozen pieces of diablo fanfic here over the years, but most were joking holiday themed, or fairly gory Halloween stories I usually wrote in a huge rush at like, 3am November 1st. They could have been better, in other words.

I’m also impressed with the length requirement. Even 3000 minimum is pretty long, and up to 10k max? That’s a substantial read; akin to 30-40 pages in your average-sized paperback. (The one I posted here on Halloween was about 5000 words, for the sake of comparison.)

Short story contests we’ve run here in the past had much shorter length requirements, mainly since we didn’t want have to slog through 8000 words of a bad story. (Though admittedly, you can generally spot a good or bad story in the first paragraph or two.)

I don’t care about the prize so much; I’ve been lucky enough to visit the Bliz offices and hang out with Bliz employees before, after all. But it would be cool to get the official recognition and to plug the site through my victory, etc. Besides, how bad would I feel if I don’t enter, and then some lame story(ies) won? It’s like a responsibility for me and every other aspiring author out there.

Oh no, they don’t list Iceland anywhere. And I had such a good story in mind. :(

@ Gexus: They basically said all places are ok, except a few. Are you sure Iceland is excluded?

@ Flux: I definitely think you should enter. They might exclude you from winning due to the fact that you are already in a privileged situation, but a honourable mention, or a 2-7th place might be a very good idea, especially for giving newer Diablo enthusiasts a heads-up on Diii.net!

Does anybody know why those particular states are excluded? I’m one of the unfortunate Victoria-based Australians. =(

But even for those US states as well… why can’t they be participants?

Well Leord.

According to Blizzard, lots of countries can enter but they are barely more than 10 or so. I double-checked. Iceland is definately not listed :/

@ Tsumaru: It’s usually because your state has specific rules or laws that prohibits special organizations to give you prizes, or perhaps have rules that are hard to get around in terms of age restrictions, or similar things that do not correspond to the contest itself.

They don’t just hate people in Victoria, and therefore ditch you! To get a better answer, you should speak to someone who is good with Victorian law.

@ Gexus: Ah. sorry to hear. I think I have heard that Iceland often is excluded. Reasons obviously the similar as for poor Tsumaru in Victoria, Australia. =(
