Bashiok on Level Cap and Inventory

Posted 23rd Sep 2008 09:51 AM by Flux

Bashiok was asked about the maximum level cap, and he restated something that’s been said before.

Blizzard Quote:
The first and last thing said on it was in an interview with Jay at WWI when we first announced, and paraphrasing that: we will probably keep it about the same, level 99, but it always seemed like an arbitrary number to stop at so we may up it to 100.

I believe Jay in another interview hinted at possible increases with expansions, but maybe I’m confusing that with every WoW Xpack.

In another post, Bashiok talked about the inventory system and the concept of using item weight.

Blizzard Quote:
A weight system is simply a different approach to inventory restrictions, and it’s actually fairly similar to a grid based system except that weight systems are generally augmented by a character stat instead of being item based upgrades.

The main issue with these systems as they relate to Diablo III is they add an additional value to items. That secondary value works to complicate and thus slow down the inventory management of a player, drawing their attention away from the action, which is of course the main focus for us with Diablo III.

I’ve played a few RPGs with weight systems, and they’re among my favorite games of all time, but it’s a case of choosing which systems works best for each game.

Someone asked if they might be making things too simple and streamlined, and thus too shallow. Bashiok thinks not.

Blizzard Quote:
Well there’s still the depth and complexity of item/stat utilization, building out your character, exploration, increased emphasis on story and lore, etc. but aside from those sort of obvious points, no I’m not worried. There are some big things we haven’t revealed yet.

not in favor of the 100 grind. make something unique.. like, once your 50 you can hybrid with another class’ talent tree. i duno… was i the only one that loved titan quest

while their at it, integrate some pvp scenario zones that you queue for like: last 1 standing wins. heros enjoy pre-arranged battles, too! gold rewards, and a bnet ranking

Seriously ... streamlined now equal shallow !!!, it seems some people still think that complicating things = depth, that’s plain wrong, there is a huge difference between complications ( due to system limitations or bad design ) and depth that comes from well thought out ideas, and clearly everything that had real depth in D2 is still here ( unique character skills trees, tons of items, the hinted crafting system, .. etc etc )

Sigh, i wonder what are those big things the haven’t revealed yet, i seriously can’t wait for Blizzcon !!!

One thing I don’t like about weight systems is that it is dependent on a stat (str), and it penalizes characters that have a low amount of it.

The lack of a weight factor for items might be the first announcement that’s kind of bummed me out.  I’d like there to be SOME sort of system in place so that full plate mail doesn’t take up the same inventory space as a chipped gem.  I’m all for streamlining things, but I do agree this is a little too shallow for the series.

Just make the inventory sortable and get rid of the tetris-like aspect and I’m happy.

Hmmm The only way I wouldn’t mind the weight system is if they gave use some reasonable way of storing items. I’m guessing, a long shot!, that some of the new systems we’ll see will be similar to WoW with trading through mail/banks/auctions. I’d actually enjoy D3 at lot with those. No more trying to find an item while getting ripped off/undetr paying. OR even holding onto those countless items that you’ll never use because they may have some value. An auction house style would allow players to put their traded item in with their price and forget about the whole thing. The could check the stats on it and ect. Once someone buys the item, you get your demanded price (if not more if someone could out bid that). Think of it like ebay, but with Diablo. You’d have the option to buy it now. that’d be cool. Also a bank with a large stash would be cool. No more switching characters for items, just mail it to them.

A weight system just sounds like it will slow everything down… and I know that by the 100th time I’m playing through this game, I’m not going to give a FF about the "increased emphasis on story and lore."

Titan Quest had a lot of good ideas which could be drawn on for D3.  However, overall as a game, TQ got boring pretty fast.  It was fantastic to look at, and the player-chosen combinations of skill trees was great, but I just hope D3 keeps the addictive fun factor of D2, which TQ never recaptured.
